Job summary

This is an Unclassified-Regular Position - Full time 9-month position.

This position is located at the LA School for the Visually Impaired.

The Louisiana Special School District is an educational service agency that includes the Louisiana Special Schools (Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired) and Special School Programs.

Elementary School teachers at the Louisiana Special Schools are specialized educators responsible for adapting the core curriculum providing direct instruction in unique compensatory skills and collaborating with a support team to ensure students reach their full academic, social and emotional potential.

This position is applicable to all Orientation & Mobility Teachers at the Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.

Program Management Responsibilities

• Implement Louisiana Schools for the Deaf and Visually Impaired (LSDVI) instructional philosophy, program, and curricula when providing outreach services to children and their families.
• Exhibit knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal laws.
• Exhibit understanding of children with handicaps and their needs, especially the children with visual impairments served by the school and demonstrate awareness of specialists, agencies, and organizations that serve children with disabilities and their families.
• Demonstrate appropriate and effective office management skills such as planning, organizing and implementing.
• Exercise good judgment in making decisions.
• Maintain accurate records of contacts, instructional strategies implemented, current calendar of appointments, expense account forms, inventory records and student records;exercise confidentiality of information in accordance with requirements of the law.
• Apply knowledge and skills of program supervision demonstrating appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.
• Maintain a positive relationship with professional associates, the community, the parents of the students and state and local agencies.

• Exhibit understanding of children with disabilities and their needs

Programmatic Responsibilities

• Travel throughout Louisiana to provide outreach services to children and their families.
• Travel to LSVI campus on annually identified dates to assist with instruction and student activities such as White Cane Day, Braille Challenge, etc. as directed by the supervisor.
• Administer prescribed pre and post tests to evaluate the student progress.
• Provide input for decisions regarding placement of children in appropriate educational programs.
• Use designated curricula and materials in the teaching/learning process in a variety of approaches and techniques which develop lesson objectives and meet child and family needs.
• Prepare and utilize appropriate materials to meet specific needs of the child and the family.
• Develop weekly lesson plans for children ages 0-3 for supervisory review.
• Specify learner outcomes in clear, concise objectives; include activities that develop objectives; identify materials needed for lessons; and state method(s) of evaluation.
