Job Summary
The Organ Recovery Coordinator I evaluates the medical eligibility of potential organ donor referrals and organ imports. Facilitates or coordinates organ donation activities including comprehensive medical management of the donor, assists with organizational quality improvement projects, and serves as a clinical resource for Hospital Services and Family Services to maximize donation opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintains the highest standards of professional conduct and interpersonal relationship development; promoting a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Responds to initial organ donor referrals and follows up on referred patients when on shift.
- Completes referral evaluations for the purpose of determining organ and tissue donor suitability based on LCO, CMS, OPTN/UNOS, AOPO and CDC guidelines and recommendations.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the legal and hospital requirements for death declaration and organ donation.
- Identifies the patients' legal next-of-kin in accordance with state and UAGA statutes.
- Assess family dynamics, availability of hospital support system, and family needs (e.g., cultural, religious, emotional, informational).
- Clinically manages the organ donor per LCO protocols and under direction of the Medical Director or AOC, allocates organ(s) in accordance with LCO and OPTN/UNOS policy, facilitates recovery and preservation of organs in the O.R., and completes all related documentation per standards.
- Identifies organ- and tissue-specific and behavioral risk factors in accordance with LCO and regulatory guidelines.
- Knowledgeable of the pathophysiological sequelae of brain death and endeavors to physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function within the parameters defined by the associated protocols.
- Collaborates with hospital staff to evaluate and physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function.
- Understands and complies with procedural aspects and requirements of blood, culture and typing specimen collection and labeling.
- Reviews and documents required information within the donor record, including labs, diagnostics, and procedural records.
- Coordinates transportation and logistics of organs, blood, tissue typing materials, and recovery teams.
- Coordinates interdepartmental processes, including post-recovery communication.
- Complies with LCO and OPTN/UNOS policies regarding documentation, maintenance, and confidentiality of records.
- Performs quality control on donor records; assists with quality improvement and Recovery Department projects, and performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in nursing, respiratory therapy, EMT, paramedic medicine or certification as a paramedic, or related biological science (including Transplantation and Donation Sciences). A Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science is preferred.
- Organ Recovery Coordinator or Hospital ER, ICU, and surgical experience preferred.

Licenses or Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Cardiopulmonary Transplant Coordination (CPTC) – optional; must be obtained within 18 months.
Supervision
Reports to the Manager of Recovery Services.
Working Environment
Work environment varies from office to home office environment to clinical practice areas.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to physically lift 75 pounds.
- Ability to move donor from cart to bed with assistance.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours.
- Ability to work 12‑hour shifts.
- Ability to respond to dispatches in a timely manner and arrive to work sites as assigned.
- Ability to function in an office environment and all hospital clinical practice areas.
