Job summary

Lifebanc is seeking an Organ Administrator on Call to act as a clinical leader during shifts, making critical decisions on donor consultations and coordinating transplant teams. The OAOC screens donors, evaluates records, and guides staff through complex cases in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Ideal candidates are RN or RRT with transplant experience, holding active licenses and BLS/ACLS, ready to work a variable 24-hour schedule to save lives.

Lifebanc, is the federally designated organ, eye and tissue recovery organization that serves 20 counties in Northeast Ohio. Position Description:

The Organ Administrator on Call (OAOC) will support the mission, vision, and values of Lifebanc by serving as a clinical leader during their scheduled OAOC shifts. The OAOC will assume direct responsibility for the clinical decision making on every donor consult made to Lifebanc during their assigned shift.

The OAOC is responsible for critical decisions regarding staffing, utilization of resources, case

management, allocation and providing real time constructive feedback to clinical staff.

Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for screening potential donors for the suitability of donation after brain death and circulatory death based on the information provided by onsite clinical staff.
  • Evaluates donor records, including authorization/disclosure, donor risk assessment interview (DRAI), hospital charting, plasma dilution, and other available documentation to determine suitability of organs for recovery, research, and transplantation.
  • Leads donor huddles to ensure all relevant recovery information is communicated, and the teams have resources available for active and pending cases.
  • Communicates with Hospital Services and Transplant Coordinators about physical findings/concerns and consults with Lifebanc Leadership and/or Medical Directors when appropriate.
  • Determines donor suitability for transfer to DCU.
  • Assist with coroner in communication, advocating for donation, when needed.
  • Communicates necessary information to the oncoming OAOC.
  • Regularly attends Lifebanc Staff meetings and required training.
  • Effectively help guide clinical staff though the implementation of standard organ donor management goals as well as help direct donor management in conjunction with Lifebanc’s medical director.
  • Oversees all logistical operations for organ donation cases during their assigned shift.
  • Effectively provide the onsite clinical staff with direct support and guidance on how to handle new and difficult situations that they may encounter.
  • Work collaboratively with Lifebanc’s referral and tissue teams.
  • Work in collaboration with the Family Support to determine the optimal time to approach families for organ donation.
  • Work with Hospital Services to help maintain good hospital relations as well as work through hospital barriers in real time during cases.
  • Remain current on all OPTN policies and CMS regulations.
  • May need to assist with organ allocation during times of higher levels of clinical activity.
  • Participates in ongoing case review to ensure processes are followed, determine areas or data trends that require process or performance improvement, and identify best practices to maximize donor gifts.
  • Monitor and review available reports to ensure metrics are being met or exceeded.
  • Provide input for data development and reporting projects and participate in the collection of data when needed.
  • Support internal and external research opportunities as needed.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required. Associate degree or higher in Nursing or Respiratory Therapy required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Three (3) years of experience as a Transplant Coordinator or five (5) years of transplant clinical experience preferred.
Certification and Licenses:
  • Active current license/certificate pursuant to required education and experience.
  • BLS and ACLS required; certification must be approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Performs all knowledge, skills, and abilities of an OAOC.
  • Self-directed, self-confident, self-motivated, results oriented; demonstrates initiative and problem-solving capability; ability to operate independently and as a team member with a full spectrum of clinicians.
  • Must be able to participate in a variable 24-hour call schedule including weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to adjust schedule to accommodate organizational needs including times of high clinical volume.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates use of critical thinking skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs and stand for extended periods of time.
