Job description

Senior Database Administrator – Role Overview

The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of Oracle database systems to ensure high performance, security, and availability. The role includes designing and implementing database schemas, monitoring database health, performing routine backups and recovery operations, troubleshooting database-related issues, managing user access and permissions, and optimizing queries to enhance system performance. The Senior Database Administrator will also ensure compliance with organizational policies and industry standards while staying current on updates, patches, and advancements in Oracle technologies. The position involves building, supporting, administering, and sustaining a clustered‑server database platform hosted in an enterprise IT environment and providing technical support for incident response, service degradations, outages, and other service interruptions.

Responsibilities
  • Architect, design, engineer, and document Oracle databases and associated infrastructure in clustered, stand‑alone, and/or appliance‑hosted configurations to fulfill mission requirements, service specifications, and cyber security mandates.
  • Investigate hardware and software problems related to the database‑hosting infrastructure and perform corrective actions.
  • Implement robust backup, restoration, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Monitor, fine‑tune, and optimize database performance to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.
  • Establish and enforce stringent database security protocols and access controls.
  • Collaborate closely with application development teams to design and optimize Oracle databases.
  • Administer Oracle RAC: Grid Infrastructure/ASM installation, patching, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop, execute, and oversee data migration initiatives when required.
  • Perform performance tuning using AWR, ASH, statspack analysis, SQL tuning, optimizer statistics, and execution plan analysis.
  • Manage data replication and migration with Oracle GoldenGate, Data Pump (expdp/impdp), and Data Guard.
  • Spearhead scalability and high‑availability efforts for Azure SQL, Synapse Analytics, and other cloud‑based databases while managing cloud resources and optimizing cost‑effectiveness.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation detailing database configurations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Generate regular performance and usage reports to support informed decision‑making.
  • Drive problem resolution and root‑cause analysis across the technology stack.
  • Participate in the resolution of database availability, capacity, and performance issues.
  • Participate in infrastructure and organizational initiatives across multiple IT disciplines.
  • Sustain fleets of physical and virtual database‑hosting servers running a mix of operating systems (Open Systems and Windows Systems) in multiple network environments.
  • Perform daily operations, onsite support, and on‑call support for all aspects of database architecture, database platforms, and database management software.
  • Work with OEMs and third‑party vendors to resolve performance degradations and outages.
  • Support and participate in projects relating to the move of systems and services to modernized hosting environments and cloud capabilities.
Qualifications
  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • BS in a related field and 10+ years of database administration experience, including experience with Oracle databases.
  • ITIL v4 Certification.
  • Oracle Database Administration (12c–21c): installation, configuration, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of data and databases, Python, and the ability to translate customer requirements, collaborating with cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with RMAN backup and recovery, including recovery catalog management.
  • Automation and scripting skills: Shell (Bash), Ansible, and/or Perl.
  • Oracle Data Guard: physical/logical standby implementation and failover/failback procedures.
  • Monitoring with Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) management, patching, and configuration.
  • Security & compliance: TDE, auditing, and STIGs.
  • Oracle Apex: installation, configuration, patching, and security.
  • ORDS: installation, configuration, and patching.
  • OS skills: Linux navigation, vi, awk, sed, sudo/ksu, cron, top, sar, and parameter configurations for Oracle implementations.
