Summary

Provides supportive nursing care to selected patients under the direction and supervision of the professional nurse; facilitates patient care by meeting specific nursing care requirements and assists in performing patient care measures; informs the registered nurse of any signs or symptoms of untoward responses.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure environmental safety and comfort. Identify patients according to HUP Policy before carrying out functions. Follow HUP fire and safety regulations.
  • Promote infection control: wash hands before and after patient contact, follow isolation procedures, handle blood and body fluids according to policies, report injuries and exposures.
  • Demonstrate principles of aseptic technique, follow sterile procedures, sterilize instruments, and observe for contamination.
  • Maintain professionalism by adhering to legal responsibilities, proper counts, safe drug handling, and specimen labeling.
  • Utilize policies and attend in-service programs and conferences to maintain competence.
  • Facilitate case progression, anticipate surgeon’s needs, and provide accurate reports and relief staff support.
  • Modify scrubbing procedures based on patient needs, recognize emergency situations, and perform in multiple specialties.
  • Use downtime productively, assist in various OR activities, and help gather supplies.
  • Identify and report defective instruments or equipment, maintain a safe environment, and participate in inventory management.
  • Demonstrate active communication, respect patient rights, and manage stress and conflicts professionally.
  • Identify educational needs, seek supervision, share knowledge, and act as a preceptor and role model.
  • Respect patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, flexibility, cost control, and participate in quality improvement efforts.
Credentials
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Two years of recent surgical technologist experience or graduation from a surgical technologist or practical nurse training program (Required)
