Job summary

MLK Community Healthcare is seeking an Operating Room Technician to assist the surgical team, prepare and set up for procedures, and maintain aseptic technique. You will work under perioperative leadership to deliver high-quality perioperative care and support the Mission and quality improvement activities.

The role requires 18+ months of perioperative experience, a High School Diploma, and BLS. CST certification is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma is required; BLS certification is required; CST certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 18 months of experience in an acute-care perioperative setting.
  • Internal candidates with approved certification may be considered without minimum experience.

  • Verifies equipment functions before procedures.
  • Delivers patient- and family-centered care per Watson Model of Care.

Job description

Position Summary

The Operating Room Technician will report to the Director of Perioperative Services and work under the supervision of Perioperative Services Clinical Unit Supervisor (CUS). He/she will assist the surgical team in providing high‑quality health care to patients requiring surgical intervention. The technician applies knowledge of aseptic technique, principles of sterilization, and an understanding of the purpose and use of surgical instruments. This role requires close concentration, high accuracy, and organization to prepare, set up, and assist in various surgical procedures. The technician is responsible as an individual and as part of the professional team to perform to the highest standards in order to provide optimal results in peri‑operative patient care. Full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Healthcare is required. The employee must demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values and support the strategic plan and quality improvement activities.

Pay

Pay Rate Type: Hourly
Salary Range: $28.80 - $49.04

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in all communications.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with peers, management, and physicians.
  • Communicates all necessary information to the Circulating Nurse and/or Operating Room Clinical Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Able to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  • Able to work under pressure and act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.
  • Follows all written policies and procedures of the hospital.
  • Assembles appropriate supplies/equipment throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Maintains and monitors sterility of the surgical field/equipment/environment throughout the procedure.
  • Decontaminates, cleans, assembles, and sterilizes instruments when necessary.
  • Works in collaboration with circulating nurse to ensure accuracy of sponge, needle, and instrument counts throughout procedures as well as identification of the surgical specimens.
  • Verifies equipment functions properly before the procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and participates in providing high quality, individualized patient/family‑centered care within the Watson Model of Care including key elements of caring, competence, communication and commitment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma required; BLS certification required; Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum of at least 18 months of experience in an acute‑care peri‑operative services hospital setting.
  • Internal candidates in good standing with approved certification may be considered without the minimum experience requirement.
  • Knowledge of core curriculum of Surgical Technologist education & training, current infection control practices, sharp‑related injury prevention, instruments and sterilization procedures.
