Job summary

HCA Florida Aventura Hospital is seeking a Surgical Technician (OR Tech) to support the surgical team in a fast-paced operating room. The role includes preparing sterile instruments, assisting during procedures, and ensuring adherence to aseptic technique and hospital standards.

Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or equivalent, CST certification preferred, completion of an accredited scrub tech program or relevant experience, and a current BLS certification or plan to obtain within

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• CST certification preferred.
• Completion of an accredited scrub tech program or related experience.
• Current Basic Life Support certification or within 30 days of start date.
• Minimum 1 year experience as an OR tech preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assembles supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
• Prepares sterile instrument table and cleans/ sterilizes equipment after procedures.
• Maintains accurate sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports discrepancies.
• Positions patient for surgery and preps skin per hospital standards.
• Supports pre-operative patients with comfort and information.
• Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
• Assists surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures during procedures.
• Cleans and restocks the room between cases and organizes for cleanup.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Surgical Scrub Technician Certification (CST) - Preferred

Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience as scrub tech

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

1 year minimum experience as OR TECH

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Surgical Technician demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments and principals of sterile technique. The Operating Room Technician anticipates the needs of the surgical suite within the scope of the position’s competencies with the use of critical thinking. The Operating Room Technician adheres to hospital policies and procedure, is supervised by the Registered Nurse, and collaborates with the surgical team to improve customer satisfaction. The Operating Room Technician is a supportive role and will be implemented, as the needs of the department require.

Major Responsibilities:

• Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
• Prepares sterile instrument table as well as gathering equipment after procedure for cleaning and sterilization.
• Accurately completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
• Positions patient accordingly to type of surgery.
• Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
• Provides comfort and support pre-operative patients.
• Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
• Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
• Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end of case clean up.
• Maintains a safe work area.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”

Specialty-Specific Responsibilities:

• Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
• Properly handles specimens: Identifies specimen appropriately with the physician – maintains specimens during the procedure and checks with surgeon prior to passing off field.
• Obtains specific supplies, non-narcotic medications and equipment: Checks preference cards prior to case and makes arrangements to obtain special supplies.

What qualifications you will need:

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
• Operating Room Scrub Technician Certification (CST)Preferred
• Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• 1 year minimum experience as an OR TECH-Preferred
