Job summary

HCA Florida Kendall Hospital is seeking an OR Technician to support the surgical team and maintain sterile technique in a fast-paced operating room. The role emphasizes instrument handling, patient positioning, specimen management, and collaboration with nurses and surgeons to ensure patient safety and an efficient workflow.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma, CST preferred, and BLS; completion of an accredited scrub program or relevant OR experience is valued.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
• Surgical Scrub Technician Program completion or equivalent experience preferred (CST preferred).
• Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech.
• Current Basic Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Responsibilities

• Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
• Prepares sterile instrument table and gathers equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
• Counts sponges, sharps, and instruments; reports discrepancies.
• Positions patient according to surgery type.
• Prepares patient skin for surgery per hospital standards.
• Provides comfort and support pre-operatively.
• Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
• Assists the surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
• Cleans and restocks room; prepares for end-of-case cleanup.
• Maintains a safe work area.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Surgical Technician demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments and principals of sterile technique. The Operating Room Technician anticipates the needs of the surgical suite within the scope of the position’s competencies with the use of critical thinking. The Operating Room Technician adheres to hospital policies and procedure, is supervised by the Registered Nurse, and collaborates with the surgical team to improve customer satisfaction. The Operating Room Technician is a supportive role and will be implemented, as the needs of the department require.

Major Responsibilities:

• Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
• Prepares sterile instrument table as well as gathering equipment after procedure for cleaning and sterilization.
• Accurately completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
• Positions patient accordingly to type of surgery.
• Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
• Provides comfort and support pre-operative patients.
• Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
• Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
• Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end of case clean up.
• Maintains a safe work area.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”

Specialty-Specific Responsibilities:

• Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
• Properly handles specimens: Identifies specimen appropriately with the physician – maintains specimens during the procedure and checks with surgeon prior to passing off field.
• Obtains specific supplies, non-narcotic medications and equipment: Checks preference cards prior to case and makes arrangements to obtain special supplies.

What qualifications you will need:

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
• Operating Room Scrub Technician Certification (CST) Preferred
• Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• 1 year minimum experience as an OR TECH-Preferred
