Job summary

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital is seeking an OR Tech to support the surgical team in the Miami area. You will assemble supplies, maintain sterile technique, and assist with positioning and transferring patients throughout procedures.

The role requires strong attention to asepsis, teamwork, and adherence to hospital policies, with opportunities for growth in a major health care system.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CST certification preferred.
  • Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience as a scrub tech.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of start date.
  • 1 year minimum experience as an OR TECH preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares sterile instrument table and equipment for cleaning and sterilization after procedures.
  • Completes sponge, sharps, and instrument counts and reports discrepancies to nurse or surgeon.
  • Positions patient according to type of surgery.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgery per hospital standards.
  • Provides comfort and support to pre-operative patients.
  • Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
  • Assists the surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
  • Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Practices and adheres to Code of Conduct and Mission and Value Statement.
  • Maintains aseptic technique and monitors for breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Handles specimens and identifies them with physician, maintains during procedure and checks with surgeon before passing off field.
  • Obtains supplies, non-narcotic medications and equipment; checks preference cards before case.

Job Summary And Qualifications

The OR Tech demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments and principals of sterile technique. The Operating Room Technician anticipates the needs of the surgical suite within the scope of the position’s competencies with the use of critical thinking. The Operating Room Technician adheres to hospital policies and procedure, is supervised by the Registered Nurse, and collaborates with the surgical team to improve customer satisfaction. The Operating Room Technician is a supportive role and will be implemented, as the needs of the department require.

Major Responsibilities
  • Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares sterile instrument table as well as gathering equipment after procedure for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Accurately completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
  • Positions patient accordingly to type of surgery.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Provides comfort and support pre-operative patients.
  • Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
  • Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
  • Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end of case clean up.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”
Specialty-Specific Responsibilities
  • Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Properly handles specimens: Identifies specimen appropriately with the physician – maintains specimens during the procedure and checks with surgeon prior to passing off field.
  • Obtains specific supplies, non-narcotic medications and equipment: Checks preference cards prior to case and makes arrangements to obtain special supplies.
What qualifications you will need
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Operating Room Scrub Technician Certification (CST)Preferred
  • Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • 1 year minimum experience as an OR TECH-Preferred
