Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
• Certification through the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).

Responsibilities

• Ensures the availability and preparedness of OR rooms, supplies and equipment needed to support efficient perioperative processes.
• Follows procedures regarding verification of medical implants.
• Maintains sterile instruments, sutures and equipment for the surgical procedure and has knowledge of each device.
• Verifies sterilization method and inspects package integrity; checks instrument tray filters.
• Assist with positioning and prepping according to standards of practice and hospital procedures.
• Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator and counts again as needed.
• Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
• Participates in site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
• Maintains sterile field to ensure patient/employee safety.
• Anticipates the surgeon's needs during the operative period.
• Handles and labels drugs and solutions under supervision in the surgical field.
• Demonstrates competence in preparation and care of specimens.
• Assists in lifting, turning and preparing patients for procedures.
• Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for decontamination and sterilization per validation.
• Assists with terminal cleaning of the room and preparation of OR between cases.
• Uses standard precautions around hazardous substances including blood and body fluids.
