Job summary

Job Details: Location: BHI Bristol Hospital Main Campus - Bristol, CT 06010; Position Type: Full Time; Education Level: 2 Year Degree; Shift: 1st Shift (Days). Sign On Bonus: $5,000 for qualified applicants.

Direct Care Responsibilities
  • Assist the registered nurse in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients.
  • Perform routine, delegated duties according to standards and policies of the Bristol Hospital Operating Room.
  • Perform scrub duties and related procedures.
  • Assist in emergency procedures, elective and scheduled cases.
  • Assist in the preparation, transportation and supervision of patients.
  • Provide direct care to assigned patients based on current standards of care.
  • Act within scope and boundaries of the role, ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with RN and surgeon, sharing observations, assessments and patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Acquire appropriate equipment and supplies, set, and maintain a sterile field or environment.
  • Serve as scrub nurse and assist circulating RN.
  • Act as a third person to assist with retraction or equipment during cases.
Safety and Infection Control
  • With circulating RN, verify patient, procedure and surgical site.
  • Perform instrument, sponge, needle and sharp counts according to policy.
  • Inspect surgical packs and instrument trays for integrity before opening.
  • Open sets and check biological indicators.
  • Participate in Q.A. monitoring activities related to surgical patients.
Equipment Care and Sterilization
  • Select and assemble equipment for specific cases.
  • Decontaminate equipment following procedures.
  • Tag instruments for replacement before sending to CSS.
  • Identify contaminated, damaged, and missing items from instrumentation sets.
  • Perform flash sterilization using Flashpaks.
  • Check sterilizer printout to ensure temperature and time meet standards.
  • Complete sterilization log for each autoclaved item.
  • Assemble sets for autoclave as needed and use washer/decontamination unit properly.
Documentation and Records
  • Sign all surgical counts on OR Record.
  • Note any patient charge items on the appropriate form.
  • Document autoclaved items in logs (Item, Temp, Time, Date, Patient I.D.).
  • Complete self‑evaluation on Performance Appraisal.
  • Maintain education log within the department.
  • Update preference cards and communicate changes to Booking Coordinator.
Learning & Development
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses within specialties.
  • Develop plan with OR Operations Manager and OR Educator to meet learning needs and maintain competency.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, unit specific in‑services, mandatory hospital in‑services (CPR, Infection Control, Safety).
  • Participate in staff meetings, problem‑solving sessions, and hospital committees.
  • Provide in‑service to peers and other healthcare team members.
  • Set goals for the upcoming year as part of performance appraisal.
  • Attain and maintain certification as a surgical technologist.
Specialty Support
  • Organize supplies and equipment by establishing par levels.
  • Monitor inventory weekly or monthly.
  • Coordinate special needs with Materials Manager and Booking Coordinator.
  • Facilitate trials of new products/items after vendor in‑service.
  • Provide support to staff in use of new/specialty items.
  • Collect evaluation forms from staff and surgeons on new products.
  • Assist in precepting new and novice employees, completing validation tools and progress checks.
Qualifications
  • Successfully completed an accredited OR Tech program and is a Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the field.
  • CPR and BLS certification.
State/Federal Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (required).
  • CPR/BLS Certification.
Physical Requirements

Extended standing and walking; occasional heavy lifting; manual dexterity required.

Work Environment

Exposed to patient and OR elements. Occasional stress from the requirements of the OR environment.

Cognitive Requirements

Attention to detail for sterilization purposes and effective communication with co‑workers.
