Job summary

Lowell General Hospital, a Tufts Medicine facility in Lowell, MA, is seeking an Environmental Services Worker. The role supports housekeeping, facilities and related services to ensure a clean, safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Position details include 40 hours per week, 3pm-11:30pm, with every other weekend and every other holiday required. The role emphasizes teamwork, adherence to safety and infection control protocols, and reliable shift coverage.

Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Environmental Services duties: Researches the environmental effects of activities to develop methods of controlling or minimizing factors contributing to environmental damage and/or improve the effectiveness of restorative activities. An organizational related support or service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuses on support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) operating in a “hands on” environment. The majority of time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. A senior level role that requires broad knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and may require vocational or technical education. Works under limited supervision for routine situations, provides assistance and training to lower level employees, and problems typically are not routine and require analysis to understand.

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Supervisor/Site Manager, this position performs a variety of housekeeping and administrative tasks and assists in the supervision of housekeeping employees in the absence of the supervisor. This position coordinates the department daily tasks, among frontline employees, and ensure a clean, safe environment. This position is responsible for room inspections, coordinating scheduled floor care, shift lineup coverage, inter-department customer relations, and supervision of bed tracking. This position will also perform various other tasks to aid the shift they are assigned to by the ES department. Including covering shift positions when the department has scheduling constraints.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. 1. Completes weekly projects as designated by the supervisor. Coordinates all project work assigned by management for shift(s), and communicates progress of work with other shift leads. Reports any equipment problems to supervisor.
2. 2. Makes sure employees are properly equipped and supplied with the necessary items to complete their tasks.
3. 3. Follows proper procedures concerning infection control, chemical control, hazardous waste disposal and handling.
4. 4. Follows proper work safety practices and body mechanics.
5. 5. Performs beginning and end of shift check-in, and rounds through facility.
6. 6. Operates of heavy duty electrical equipment: wet vacuums, extractors, buffers, floor machines, auto scrubbers, upholstery machines, pressure washers and upright vacuums.
7. 7. Participates in accurate inventory and record keeping concerning laundry services. Communicates to manager when supplies are needed.
8. 8. Performs other duties as required e.g. marking linen; cleaning the linen areas; washing/drying mops, rags, lab coats, cubicle curtains, kitchen linens, etc.
9. 9. Performs the following as needed during functions: setting up of furniture, distribution and set-up of audio visual equipment, and general cleaning, before or after functions.
10. 10. Successfully completes competency assessment. Answers questions concerning policies and procedures while in the work environment.
11. 11. Works in open positions when necessary to assure all areas have adequate coverage.
12. 12. Allocate resources to provide coverage thought the facility.
13. 13. Conducts quality insurance inspections and ensures corrective action as required based on minimum QA score.
14. 14. Coordinates and executes small furniture moves, and room setups in a timely manner.
15. 15. Conducts monthly employee safety committee meetings, and monthly department safety inspections.
16. 16. Maintains composure and professionalism during difficult situations.

Physical Requirements

1. 1. Standing, walking, bending, and stretching majority of shift.
2. 2. Ability to push heavy loaded carts and lift between 30-60 lbs.
3. 3. Occasional climbing of ladders.
4. 4. Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, blood, body waste, and contaminated waste. Exposure to climate conditions when depositing trash in compactor.
5. 5. Possibility of cuts and needle punctures.
6. 6. Occasional exposure to hazards which may cause serious injury/illness (T.B., hepatitis, rodent bites). When working in non-patient areas, those hazards are minimal.
7. 7. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate prescription medications and computer keyboard.
