OR Nurse Transition to Practice Program (RN)

Program Overview

Hartford Hospital has implemented a comprehensive transition to practice program for novice operating room nurses. This 12-month program is designed to help new graduate and experienced nurses (without OR experience) master the necessary competencies for perioperative nursing through a blended learning approach, including evidence-based modules, classroom learning, simulation, and clinical experiences.

Application Details

The program starts with cohort dates on August 11, 2025, and November 3, 2025, with application deadlines on June 27, 2025, and September 19, 2025, respectively. Candidates must submit a complete online application, resume, and cover letter explaining their interest and career goals in perioperative nursing.

Program Phases

1. Introduction to Perioperative Nursing: First 5 months focusing on foundational skills via evidence-based learning modules (AORN Periop 101), classroom, simulation, and clinical experiences. Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7 am – 3:30 pm. Completion includes a final exam.
2. Clinical Orientation (Unit Specific): Remaining 6-7 months immersed in the clinical environment, mastering unit-based competencies, professional development, and governance, with mentorship from preceptors and the nursing team.

Roles and Units

OR nurses serve as Scrub or Circulating Nurses in various specialized units:

• Core OR: General surgery, ENT, trauma, transplant, robotics, and more, providing 24/7 coverage.
• Neuro OR: Neuro and spine surgeries.
• Cardio-Vascular OR: Cardiac and vascular procedures.
• Ambulatory OR: Same-day surgeries across multiple specialties.
• Bone and Joint Institute OR: Orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgeries.

Qualifications

• Current Connecticut nursing license required.
• BLS certification required at hire.
• Perioperative experience preferred (e.g., Summer Student Nurse Fellow, Capstone Rotation).
