Program Description:

Hartford Hospital’s comprehensive transition to practice program for novice OR nurses ensures mastery of essential competencies through a blended, multimodal approach aligned with Hartford Healthcare's values of excellence, safety, caring, and integrity.

Candidates are hired into cohorts with the following start dates and application deadlines:

  • August 11, 2025 (Application Deadline June 27, 2025)
  • November 3, 2025 (Application Deadline September 19, 2025)

This 12-month program is suitable for new graduate RNs and experienced nurses without OR experience. It consists of two phases:

  1. Introduction to Perioperative Nursing: First 5 months involve evidence-based modules (AORN Periop 101), classroom learning, simulation, and clinical experiences. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 7 am-3:30 pm. Completion includes passing the Periop 101 final exam.
  2. Clinical Orientation (Unit Specific): The remaining 6-7 months focus on unit-based competencies, professional development, and mentorship, following your departmental schedule and preceptors.

Throughout, learners are mentored by preceptors, management, and Nursing Professional Development teams. Additionally, new grads participate in Hartford Healthcare’s Graduate Nurse Residency program.

The Role of the OR Nurse:

Operating Room (OR) nurses, or perioperative nurses, provide care before, during, and after surgery, ensuring patient safety and high-quality care. Roles include:

  • Scrub Nurse: Prepares instruments, maintains sterile environment, assists during surgery.
  • Circulating Nurse: Manages OR environment, monitors patient safety, documents, and communicates with the team.

Eligible OR Units:

  • Core OR: General, ENT, colorectal, trauma, transplant, vascular, bariatrics, urology, gynecology, thoracic, robotics.
  • Neuro OR: Brain, spine surgeries, neurovascular conditions.
  • Cardio-Vascular OR: Heart, vascular surgeries including bypass, transplants.
  • Ambulatory OR: Same-day surgeries across multiple specialties.
  • Bone and Joint Institute OR: Orthopedic and musculoskeletal procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Current Connecticut nursing license required prior to start.
  • BLS certification required at hire.
  • Exposure to perioperative environment preferred (e.g., Summer Student Nurse Fellow, Capstone, non-licensed perioperative employment).
