Job summary

Tufts Medicine is seeking an experienced optometrist to independently manage a diverse patient caseload, provide specialized eye care, and mentor junior optometrists. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality outpatient ophthalmology services.

Responsibilities include comprehensive eye exams, refractive care, and managing diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, along with pre/post-operative care and patient education.

Qualifications

  • OD degree and state licensure are required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical optometry experience.
  • 4 years of clinical experience preferred.

Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Ophthalmology duties: Performs, prescribes, and analyzes results for the treatment of illnesses, diseases, injuries, and conditions that are related to the eye. Tasks include vision assessments, eye surgeries and advanced forms of eye disease in patients with significant systemic illness. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An experienced level role that applies practical knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Works independently with general supervision, problems faced are difficult but typically not complex, and may influence others within the job area through explanation of facts, policies and practices.

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry school.
  2. State licensure to practice optometry.
  3. Two (2) years of clinical experience as an optometrist.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Four (4) years of clinical experience as an optometrist.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Conducts comprehensive eye exams, including advanced diagnostic testing and assessments for patients with complex visual or health concerns.
  2. Prescribes corrective lenses and manages patients with a variety of refractive errors, including contact lens fitting and management.
  3. Diagnoses and treats common eye diseases and conditions (e.g., dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, macular degeneration).
  4. Provides pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgeries (e.g., LASIK, cataract surgery).
  5. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and clinic efficiency.
  6. Develops personalized treatment plans and educates patients on long-term eye care strategies.
Physical Requirements
  1. Normal office work environment for an outpatient clinic patient care area.
Skills & Abilities
  1. Proficient in advanced diagnostic techniques, including OCT and visual field testing.
  2. Ability to manage patients with moderate to severe ocular conditions.
  3. Knowledge of treatment options for ocular diseases and conditions.
  4. Ability to mentor and train less-experienced optometrists or support staff.
  5. Ability to perform advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  6. Knowledge of specialty contact lenses, low-vision aids, and treating more complex conditions.
  7. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to educate and counsel patients.
