Job summary

Hamilton Company, a leader in precision measurement devices, seeks an Optical Engineer to design, develop, and validate optical systems for Cerillo's compact microplate readers. You will work closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure high sensitivity and accuracy across multiple wavelengths.

The role requires strong expertise in optical theory, hands-on assembly and testing, and the ability to translate complex specifications into repeatable, manufacturable designs for robust

Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of optical theory including photometry, radiometry, geometric optics, interference, and stray light analysis.
  • Proficiency in optical design and simulation software such as Zemax OpticStudio, FRED, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience designing and assembling precision optical systems including alignment, calibration, and performance verification.
  • Experience with absorbance-based or transmittance-based photometric measurement systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop precision optical systems for compact multi-wavelength absorbance microplate readers and related subsystems.
  • Determine optical specifications and system requirements including wavelength selection and signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Select, evaluate, and qualify optical components such as light sources, photodetectors, filters, and lenses.
  • Design mechanical mounts and alignment fixtures ensuring stable optical alignment through manufacture and field use.
  • Develop repeatable alignment procedures to achieve photometric performance across wavelengths and plate positions.
  • Perform optical modeling and simulation to guide design decisions using Zemax OpticStudio or FRED.
  • Collaborate with electrical/mechanical engineers on interfaces and enclosure design.
  • Develop test methods and acceptance criteria for optical performance at various production stages.
  • Troubleshoot optical issues and document corrective actions.
