Job summary

Draper seeks an Optical Instrument Engineer in Cambridge, MA to advance electro-mechanical inertial instruments for cutting-edge guidance applications. You will work with engineers and physicists to build gyro and accelerometer prototypes, characterize performance, and drive production rollout for hardened sensors.

You will draft technical documents, collaborate across teams, and contribute to test results while solving complex problems in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Applied Physics, Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of Hardware Instrument Engineering or related experience.
  • Ability to draft and present technical documents and reports.
  • Clearance may be required for some roles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Applies technical knowledge to areas of expertise and pursues new skills.
  • Analyzes requirements and develops precision instruments with minimal guidance.
  • Designs experiments and hardware to prove concepts.
  • Collaborates to design prototype and production hardware to meet needs.
  • Develops fabrication processes for custom instruments.
  • Drafts and presents technical documents and testing results.
  • Provides device training to employees and subcontractors.
  • Performs independent research and problem solving.
  • Contributes content for technical reports and presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
