Job summary

The Optical Engineer at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) will support laser operations through data analysis, testing, and system operation. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 3+ years optics/laser experience.
  • Experience with lasers; laser diodes preferred.
  • Experience with automated optical alignment, including pick‑and‑place or robotic equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Complete qualification and stand watch during operation of the OMEGA laser system.
  • Perform engineering analysis supporting laser development, system performance, operations, and safety.
  • Collect, process, and interpret technical data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Conduct laboratory and field testing using oscilloscopes and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Support validation and verification activities through structured test plans and documentation.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs and test plans for technicians and operators.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Support laser upgrade projects and software development under a project manager.
