Job summary

AEG Vision in Harwich, MA is seeking an Optical Consultant to support Optometrists and educate patients, ensuring exceptional care. You will perform preliminary evaluations and coordinate referrals, while maintaining accurate patient records in an HIPAA-compliant environment.

The role requires strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to work in a fast-paced setting. This is a full-time, on-site position with benefits.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED qualification.
  • Strong attention to the details and ability to work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
  • PC skills to include Microsoft Office, Windows, and Word Processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively and professionally collaborate with co‑workers and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
  • Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit to provide details to Optometrist.
  • May be required to schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
  • Records and maintains patient records/files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
  • Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
  • May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, etc.).
  • Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and assists with clerical duties related to medical documentation (participating practices only). Checking CPT codes, billings for post op, office visit etc.
  • Ensures that maximum schedule utilization occurs through pre‑appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, contacting no‑shows or canceled patients to reschedule.
  • Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory, check‑in and takes contact lens orders in person or by phone.
  • Performs end‑of‑day responsibilities to include opti‑schedule wrap‑up, end‑of‑day checklist, etc.
  • Cleans and organizes frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the practice.
  • May be asked to act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
  • Performs other duties within the Practice as requested.

About the role
