Job Description

Responsibilities:

  1. Bioinformatics & HPC:
  • Run or develop bioinformatic pipelines (Linux/bash, Python) on UF’s HiPerGator supercomputer for metagenomic analyses.
  • Collaborate with UFIT Research Computing staff to troubleshoot and optimize large-scale data workflows.
  • Laboratory Work:
    • Extract DNA/RNA from environmental samples and prepare libraries for metagenomics.
    • Maintain lab protocols and organize sample inventories.
  • Field & Logistics:
    • Assist in coordinating logistics for oceanographic cruises (e.g., R/V Falkor, R/V Atlantis).
    • Support sample collection and field research activities.
  • Outreach:
    • Participate in efforts to make science accessible to diverse communities.
    • Contribute ideas for lab outreach events and digital content.

    Compensation: $15/hour

    Qualifications:

    • Newly accepted college student or student in their first year of college interested in research in a lab.
    • Preferred skills include being proactive and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills.
    • Basic Linux/Unix command-line knowledge; scripting (bash/Python) is a plus.
    • Interest in high-performance computing, large-scale data analysis, molecular biology, and fieldwork.
    • Background in biology or computer science (or both).
    • Team player with strong problem-solving abilities.
