Job description

Job Summary: Assists physicians in the ophthalmologic care and treatment of patients.

Job Duties
  1. Assists physicians with examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressings.
  2. Compiles preliminary histories on new patients.
  3. Records new problems, including all current medications, on return patients on EMR charting.
  4. Scribes in electronic medical record as dictated by physician.
  5. Tests visual acuity, near and distant, and intraocular pressures.
  6. Administers dilating agents for ophthalmic fundus examination upon successful completion of ophthalmic pharmacology exam.
  7. Escorts patients to waiting area.
  8. Performs ophthalmic testing, visual field testing, air tension testing, color vision testing, color sensitivity testing, automatic refractors, Retinomax, Keratometry, lensometry, intraocular lens measurements, pachymetry, optical coherence tomography testing, photographic imaging, and corneal topography.
  9. Assists physician with minor clinic surgery, special procedures, ophthalmic lavage, and preoperative preparation of patients.
  10. Provides postoperative instructions when indicated.
  11. Assists with and sets up laser treatments, including Argon, Krypton, and YAG lasers, ultrasound testing, and cryopexy surgery.
  12. Performs ultrasound for measuring intraocular lens.
  13. Completes calculations of findings and obtains Keratometer readings.
  14. Prepares cultures and pathology specimens for the laboratory and transports to the correct areas.
  15. Takes and records vital signs.
  16. Cleans and prepares instruments and equipment.
  17. Sends for repair or exchange.
  18. Keeps examining rooms clean, orderly, and well stocked with supplies.
  19. Assists with the emergency admission of patients.
  20. Ensures patient is properly transported to hospital unit.
  21. Completes necessary charges for appliances, dressings, medications, special procedures, and testing for the patient.
  22. Orders pharmaceuticals, linen, stock, stationery, surgical instruments, and other ophthalmic supplies for the clinic.
