A Brief Overview
This role is responsible for assisting the clinical provider with patient care including patient work-ups, diagnostic testing procedures, and administrative tasks.

Responsible for daily patient care and flow of assigned clinic. Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications. Knowledge of ophthalmic instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed. Ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment required. Ability to communicate with patients, coworkers and supervisor is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.

Travel to satellite offices in Pennsylvania and/or New Jersey is a requirement for this position.

What you will do

  • Assists physicians with patient care by conducting interviews in an efficient and accurate manner; records chief complaints, documents ROS and medical and surgical history for each patient.
  • Performs diagnostic testing procedures including but not limited to: visual acuity, visual field testing (including confrontational fields), tonometry, refractions, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography and OCT.
  • Supports a safe patient care environment including, but not limited to, maintaining all equipment and cleaning used instruments or sending tSPD for sterilization on a daily basis.
  • Effectively manages patient flow and directs physicians to the next patient to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner.
  • Promptly and professionally assists the doctor in patient care.
  • Performs technical workups, and special testing including visual acuity, visual field testing (confrontational fields and formal), tonometry (Icare, tonopen), pupil exams, lensometry, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography and OCT.
  • Utilizes proper eyedrop technique and sterility
  • Chief complaints, medical and surgical history, and document ROS for each patient in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Communicates with patients and families during their visit regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, surgery scheduling, etc.
  • Maintains and cleans all equipment being used, and reports to supervisor if not in working condition.
  • Administrative duties including returning phone or Epic messages to patients, families and pharmacies, paperwork, telemed pre-appointment calls, ect.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains certification.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED- Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of ophthalmic technician experience - Required
  • At least two (2) years of ophthalmic technician experience - Preferred

  • Intermediate proficiency in the performance of the ophthalmic technician work up (Required proficiency)
  • Intermediate proficiency in the operation of ophthalmology diagnostic testing equipment (Required proficiency)
  • Advanced knowledge of eye anatomy, physiology and pathology (Required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of pediatric ophthalmology (Required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of HIPAA regulations (Required proficiency)
  • Intermediate proficiency with electronic medical records (EPIC) (Required proficiency)
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office) (Required proficiency)
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills (Required proficiency)
  • Solid interpersonal skills (Required proficiency)
  • Solid organizational skills (Required proficiency)
  • Solid critical thinking / problem-solving skills (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) - within 12 months - Required or
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) - within 12 months - Required

SALARY RANGE:

$24.87 - $31.09 Hourly
