Job Summary: Assists physicians in the ophthalmologic care and treatment of patients.
Job Duties
- Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressings.
- Compile preliminary histories on new patients.
- Record new problems, including all current medications, on return patients using EMR charting.
- Scribe in electronic medical records as dictated by the physician.
- Test visual acuity (near and distant) and intraocular pressures.
- Administer dilating agents for ophthalmic fundus examinations after completing ophthalmic pharmacology training.
- Escort patients to the waiting area.
- Perform ophthalmic testing such as visual field testing, air tension testing, color vision and sensitivity testing, automatic refractors, Retinomax, keratometry, lensometry, intraocular lens measurements, pachymetry, optical coherence tomography, photographic imaging, and corneal topography.
- Assist physicians with minor clinic surgeries, special procedures, ophthalmic lavage, and preoperative patient preparation.
- Provide postoperative instructions when necessary.
- Assist with setup and procedures involving laser treatments (Argon, Krypton, YAG), ultrasound testing, and cryopexy surgery.
- Perform ultrasound measurements for intraocular lenses.
- Calculate findings and obtain keratometer readings.
- Prepare cultures and pathology specimens for laboratory analysis and transport them appropriately.
- Take and record vital signs.
- Clean and prepare instruments and equipment, arranging for repairs or exchanges as needed.
- Maintain examining rooms in a clean, organized, and stocked condition.
- Assist in emergency patient admissions and ensure proper patient transportation to hospital units.
- Complete charges for appliances, dressings, medications, procedures, and tests.
- Order pharmaceuticals, linens, stock, stationery, surgical instruments, and other ophthalmic supplies.
Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. The role requires compliance with organizational policies and procedures. The responsibilities outlined are typical but not exhaustive; additional competencies may be required based on departmental orientation.
