Position: Ophthalmic Assistant

The Ophthalmic Assistant is an integral part of the ophthalmic team, assisting in the effort to prevent, detect, diagnose, and manage conditions that interfere with sight. The primary focus is documentation of the general and eye health history under the supervision of a certified provider.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED.
  • License & Certification: None.
  • No experience required.
Responsibilities
  • Patient Population (Clinical): Engage in population-appropriate communication, understand growth and development milestones, give clear instructions regarding treatment, involve family/guardians, identify physical limitations, recognize behavioral health issues, interpret data, and respond to psychological or cultural needs. Perform treatments, administer medication, operate equipment safely, and recognize signs of abuse or neglect. Greet patients, answer phones, schedule appointments, and maintain patient records and insurance forms. Maintain a safe work environment and clinic area.
  • Patient Intake: Obtain vital signs and necessary information, assist in documentation, perform treatments, administer ophthalmic dilating drops, and assist with invasive procedures.
  • Care Coordination: Return patient calls, coordinate diagnostic testing and hospital procedures, arrange admissions, and assist in implementing age-appropriate care.
