The Ophthalmic Assistant is an important part of the Ophthalmic team, assisting in the effort to prevent, detect, diagnose, and manage conditions that interfere with sight. The primary focus is the documentation of the general and eye health history under the supervision of a certified provider.

Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY):
  • Engages in population-appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/families regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population-related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, or associated with, psychological needs or cultural norms.
  • Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Greeting patients, answering telephones, scheduling appointments, updating and filing patient medical records/insurance forms.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintains the clinic area, including cleaning, stocking examination rooms, daily setup, securing computer equipment, and maintaining diagnostic equipment.
Patient Intake
  • Obtain vital signs, specimens, and other necessary information for proper evaluation, utilizing universal precautions.
  • Assist the provider in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Perform treatments, administer medication, and operate equipment safely.
  • Administer ophthalmic dilating eye drops.
  • Assist the physician with invasive procedures.
Care Coordination
  • Return routine patient telephone calls as directed and document actions taken.
  • Coordinate ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures, admissions, additional patient visits, and medical records.
  • Arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Assist in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations, including direct patient care as part of the clinical team.
Qualifications

Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED. No experience required. License & Certification: None.
