Job summary

Eye Center of St. Augustine, part of EyeSouth Partners, seeks an experienced ophthalmic assistant to support ophthalmologists and optometrists in testing, history taking, and data entry.

The role includes assisting with procedures, maintaining EMR documentation, and ensuring patient safety and comfort. Requirements include a high school diploma, 5+ years in ophthalmic assisting, and a current iJCAHPO COA certification; Nextech/ICP experience is strongly preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
  • Current iJCAHPO COA certification required.
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
  • Able to code CPT and ICD-10 for diagnostic testing.
  • Proficient in performing clinical tests and data entry into EMR.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by exam scheduled/history.
  • Act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under physician direction.
  • Assist with simple in-office procedures and ensure informed consent.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms.
  • Code CPT and ICD-10 codes for diagnostic testing.
  • Assist with triage for emergency and work-in patients.

Job description

The Eye Center of St. Augustine is proud to be the oldest and largest state of the art eye care center in the area offering the convenience of an eye center, a surgery center, and an optical shop all under one roof. With satellite locations in World Golf Village, Palm Coast, and Palatka, our board-certified doctors provide premier best in class care to patients across Northeast Florida. Our ophthalmic surgeons, perform cataract, laser, and ophthalmic plastic surgery on site in our state-of-the-art Eye Surgery Center. We are also able to provide eye examinations for adults as well as children over the age of seven while offering a full-service optical shop at each of our locations. We are a fast growing, patient-centered, compassionate team!

Responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status. The ophthalmic technician is proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests, drawing on formal education and/or clinical experience that provide a solid understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.

Responsibilities
  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and/or patient history.
  • Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Ability to assist with simple in-office procedures ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Able to code CPT and applicable ICD-10 codes for diagnostic testing.
Administrative
  • Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering
  • Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
  • Assist with patient requested paperwork completed (FMLA, DMV)
  • Complete electronic prescription refill related tasks including medication prior authorization process
  • Assist with triage for emergency and work-in patients
  • Understand and accept responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer
  • Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred
  • Current iJCAHPO COA certification required
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred
