Job summary

Penn Medicine’s Ophthalmology department at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to support patient care per diem. You will assist the Ophthalmologist with examinations, document histories, perform basic testing and help coordinate care with the interprofessional team.

Ideal candidates hold a High School Diploma or GED (or an Associate’s Degree or Formal Ophthalmic Technician Program) with 0–1 years of ophthalmology experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with 0–1 year ophthalmology experience required.
• Associate’s Degree with 0–1 year ophthalmology experience preferred.
• Formal Ophthalmic Technician Program with 0–1 year education/certification considered.

Responsibilities

• Completes patient medical and ocular history and allergies.
• Documents medications and conducts health screening questions.
• Performs preliminary ocular exam including visual acuities and tests.
• Administers eye medications per protocol and assists in procedures.
• Schedules imaging and collaborates with pharmacies to fill Rx’s.
• Trains other Technicians as assigned by manager.
• Ensures compliance with Penn Medicine policies and safety standards.

Summary: The Ophthalmic Technician exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

The Ophthalmic Technician is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients, who range in age from infancy to the elderly, and demonstrates care within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Person and family centered care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology.

The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with the inter-professional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The Ophthalmic Technician focuses on developing knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, cultural, educational, safety and age-appropriate considerations of the patient.

The Ophthalmic Technician's practices impact the organization's vision, mission, goals, and the care delivery system. The Ophthalmic Technician complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies.

The Ophthalmic Technician assist the Ophthalmologist with direct patient care. Completes patient medical and ocular history. Completes preliminary ocular exam.

Responsibilities:

• Completes medical and ocular history on all patients.
• Completes chief complaint and allergies on all patients.
• Completes health screening questions including falls, abuse, depression screening.
• Documents all medications on all patients.
• Completes preliminary ocular exam including visual acuities, color vision, lensometry, cover tests, motility tests, stereopsis tests, external examination, pupil evaluation, slit lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressures, refractometry, pachymetry, vital signs.
• Administer eye medications according to protocol.
• Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing, IOL biometry calculations, topography, OCT, and additional testing as needed.
• Assist in work up of patients before, during and after the following, (but not limited to) Argon, Diode, Yag, and SLT laser.
• Completion of surgical, all procedures, and pre-cert insurance forms when required.
• Schedule MRI’s and retrieve reports if applicable.
• Performs Universal Protocol on all patients receiving procedures.
• Collaborate with pharmacies to ensure patient Rx’s are filled.
• Train other Technicians as assigned by manager.
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma/GED AND 0-1 years ophthalmology experience (Required)
• OR Associate’s Degree AND 0-1 years ophthalmology experience (Preferred)
• OR Formal Ophthalmic Technician Program AND 0-1 years education and certification will be considered in lieu of experience (Preferred)

Credentials:

• BLS/CPR as a Healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (Required at time of hire)
• COA, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (Required at time of hire)
• COT & COMT (Preferred)
