Job summary

EyeSouth Partners' Kentucky Eye Institute in Middlesboro is seeking an ophthalmic technician to assist ophthalmologists and optometrists, perform clinical tests, and collect data on patients' ocular health. The role involves chart review, taking ocular history, documenting visual acuity, and maintaining exam rooms; a high school diploma and ophthalmic experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
  • Ophthalmic and/or optometric technician experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient charts for completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform testing ordered by doctors based on exam type, patient history or complaints.
  • Act as medical scribe; enter data into EMR during patient exams.
  • Record ocular and systemic history and document visual acuity.
  • Administer ophthalmic medications under physician direction.
  • Assist with simple in-office procedures and ensure informed consent.
  • Educate patients and maintain exam rooms cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Comply with all procedures, protocols and regulations.

As one of the region’s premier eye care providers, we take great pride in caring for our patients. Responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s ocular health status. The ophthalmic technician is proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests, drawing on formal education and/or clinical experience that provide a solid understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.

Essential -duties
Clinical
  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and/or patient history.
  • Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Ability to assist with simple in-office procedures ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
Administrative
  • Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering
  • Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
  • Understand and accept responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer
  • Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
Qualifications/Requirements
  • High School Diploma or the equivalent years related experience preferred
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred
  • Ophthalmic and/or optometric technician experience preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
