Job Summary

Responsible for performing advanced ophthalmology testing functions in the office for eye surgeons. Supports Multi Specialty Eye Surgeons and acts as a training resource for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

Essential Functions

• Obtain brief medical history and chief complaint from patients.
• Maintain patient's medical records via electronic medical record system.
• Set up and assist with office procedures.
• Perform tests within the scope of certification, including history taking, visual acuity measurement, refractometry, tonometry, pupil size/reactivity measurement, eye muscle function testing, visual field testing, corneal thickness and curvature measurement, corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurement, retinal thickness and topography, fluorescein angiography, A and B-scan ultrasonography, assist with contact lens fitting and patient instruction, prepare for and assist with in-office procedures, and assist during surgeries.
• Assist physicians by scribing and performing various tasks during patient exams.
• Schedule surgeries, follow-up appointments, and referrals; obtain pre-certification for surgeries.
• Perform surgical assisting for eye surgeons.
• Manage phone calls, forwarding those requiring physician action.
• Monitor and maintain stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
• Provide education and training to patients and families.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

This is a non-management position reporting to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent, or post-high school education.
• No specific experience required.

In Lieu Of

• Graduate of a Doctor of Optometry degree program will be accepted in lieu of JCAHPO certification as a COT.
