Responsibilities

Job Summary

The role of an Ophthalmic Technician is vital in the field of eye care and vision health. These skilled professionals play a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists by performing a variety of technical duties. The job involves direct patient care, diagnostic testing, and ensuring that patients receive the highest level of service possible. Responsibilities*

• Measure and record pupillary response and near and far visual acuity.
• Perform lensometry, laser visual acuity, baseline external exams, visual field tests, automated keratometry, and tonometry, tear testing, color vision testing, and stereopsis testing.
• Extract basic patient histories and scribe for physicians.
• Measure pulse and blood pressure.
• Administer eye drops under direction of physician.
• Assist in preparing and updating records for patient follow-up research data.
• Assist in preparing requisitions for patient testing.
• Assist in reviewing charts and schedules and schedule patient testing.
• Calibrate, clean and maintain ophthalmic equipment and instruments.
• Stock examining, testing and treatment rooms with ophthalmic supplies.
• Order supplies for clinic operations.
• Assist clerical staff as assigned.
• Assist patients into and out of examining areas.
• Assist Ophthalmic Medical Personnel students with basic skills as assigned.
• Perform as a "float" technician in other clinical areas, as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

• Graduation from high school
• Successful completion of Michigan Medicine's 12-week training program is required or some experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.
• Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required within one year of employment.
• This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Desired Qualifications*

• Two years of college with courses in health science
• Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and medical terminology is desirable
• Experience as an ophthalmic technician (at least 2 years, at least COA or equivalent)
• Commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the research volunteer
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
• Uncompromising integrity
• Capacity and willingness to learn new skills as the positional needs change
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Experience with computer keyboards and applicable software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook or equivalent)
