Job summary

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Certification/experience as Ophthalmic Technician desired or required training completed.
  • COA certification to be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Primary Source Verification is required.
  • Knowledge of EMR and medical terminology is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Measure and record pupillary response and visual acuity.
  • Perform lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, and related tests.
  • Assist physicians, take patient histories, and scribe as needed.
  • Administer eye drops and prepare follow-up records for research data.
  • Calibrate and maintain ophthalmic equipment and stock rooms with supplies.
  • Assist in scheduling patient testing and review charts.
  • Float to other clinical areas as assigned and support clerical staff.

Job Summary

The role of an Ophthalmic Technician is vital in the field of eye care and vision health. These skilled professionals play a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists by performing a variety of technical duties. The job involves direct patient care, diagnostic testing, and ensuring that patients receive the highest level of service possible. This helps in the accurate diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Measure and record pupillary response and near and far visual acuity.
  • Perform lensometry, laser visual acuity, baseline external exams, visual field tests, automated keratometry,and tonometry, tear testing, color vision testing, and steropsis testing.
  • Extract basic patient histories and scribe for physicians.
  • Measure pulse and blood pressure.
  • Administer eye drops under direction of physician.
  • Assist inpreparing and updating records for patient follow-up research data.
  • Assist in preparing requisitions for patient testing.
  • Assist in reviewing charts and schedules and schedule patient testing.
  • Calibrate, clean and maintain ophthalmic equipment and instruments.
  • Stock examining, testing and treatment rooms with ophthalmic supplies.
  • Order supplies for clinic operations.
  • Assist clerical staff as assigned.
  • Assist patients into and out of examining areas.
  • Assist Ophthalmic Medical Personnel students with basic skills as assigned.
  • Perform as a "float" technician in other clinical areas, as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school
  • Successful completion of Michigan Medicine's 12-week training program is required or some experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required within one year of employment.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of college with courses in health science
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and medical terminology is desirable
  • Experience as an ophthalmic technician (at least 2 years, at least COA or equivalent)
  • Commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the research volunteer
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Uncompromising integrity
  • Capacity and willingness to learn new skills as the positional needs change
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with computer keyboards and applicable software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook or equivalent)

Modes of Work

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
