Qualifications

  • Experience conducting ophthalmic tests and patient workups.
  • Ability to perform visual acuity testing and refractometry.
  • Familiarity with tonometry equipment and instrument cleaning.

Responsibilities

  • History taking including ocular and medical history.
  • Visual acuity assessment with/without correction.
  • Tonometry using ICare or Tonopen; maintain instrument sterility.
  • Lensometry and pupillary assessment; dilation considerations.
  • Refractometry and support during eye exams and cataract evaluations.
  • Maintain stock; restock exam rooms; travel to other sites as needed.

Job description

UPMC is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support Comprehensive Eye Service at UPMC Vision Institute, located at 1622 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This position works Monday through Friday during daylight hours between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with start times varying based on clinic schedules. The Ophthalmic Technician will play a key role in delivering high-quality patient care by conducting patient workups, diagnostic testing, and assisting providers during a variety of eye care visits, including follow-ups from the walk-in clinic, diabetic eye exams, comprehensive eye exams, and cataract evaluations. Travel to other locations is extremely limited (less than 5%); however, flexibility to support other departments within the building as needed is required. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced ophthalmology environment and providing exceptional patient care across a diverse patient population.

Responsibilities:
  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus. Refractometry: auto-refractor, manifest refractions, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
