Job summary

SSM Health is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our ophthalmology team and support high-quality eye care. You will assist in patient care, perform preliminary vision testing, and help with imaging and documentation in the EMR system.

The role requires a high school diploma, 1 year healthcare experience, and COA certification is preferred or obtainable within 18 months. Excellent communication and teamwork are essential for a busy clinic.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 1 year health care experience.
  • COA certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 18 months of hire.
  • Experience in ophthalmology or optometry is a plus.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist eye care providers in the exam and treatment of patients.
  • Initiate documentation of patient chief complaint, history, and ocular findings.
  • Perform testing such as visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, refraction, and keratometry.
  • Assist with diagnostic imaging (OCT, fundus photography, visual fields).
  • Document patient history and maintain medical records in the EMR system.
  • Educate patients on eye health, medications, and post-procedure care.
  • Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
  • Support physicians during minor procedures and surgeries.
