Job summary

Thomas Eye Group is hiring an Ophthalmic Assistant for their Lithonia, GA location. This role supports our ophthalmology clinics by conducting patient assessments, performing tests, and ensuring a positive patient experience in a vibrant, patient-focused environment. Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; some college or degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Certification as COA/COT is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic patient assessments including visual acuity tests.
  • Perform range of tests such as visual fields and assist in manifest refractions.
  • Work closely with clinical support team to ensure efficient patient flow.

We have been offering services in optometry, cataract surgery, cornea, retina, and glaucoma treatment, oculoplastics, and pediatric ophthalmology for 50 years!

As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting our ophthalmology clinics. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Patient Work-Up: Conduct basic patient assessments, including visual acuity tests, intraocular pressure measurements, and dilation.
  • Testing and Evaluation: Perform a range of tests such as confrontation visual fields, cover testing, and versions, and assist in manifest refractions.
  • Patient Interaction: Greet patients warmly, explain testing procedures, answer questions, and provide necessary education.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with our clinical support team and providers to ensure a smooth and efficient patient flow.
  • Safety and Compliance: Maintain a safe work environment by recognizing and addressing common safety hazards.
  • Documentation: Utilize our EMR system to accurately record patient data and ensure it’s ready for provider review.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma is required; some college or a degree is preferred. Certification as a COA or COT is a plus.

Experience: 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare environment.

A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Proficiency: Experienced in using EMR systems to manage patient information efficiently.
  • Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to interact with patients and team members clearly and effectively.
  • Reliable and Punctual: Consistently dependable and arrives on time to support smooth clinic operations.
  • Organized Multitasker: Excellent at juggling multiple tasks with great attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proactive in Issue Resolution: Thoughtful and diligent in identifying, prioritizing, and escalating issues as needed.
  • Typing Proficiency: Demonstrates excellent typing skills, with a minimum speed of 45 words per minute and high accuracy.
  • Active Listening and Learning: Proficient in listening and comprehending tasks and instructions, with a strong willingness to learn on the job.
  • Knowledge of Diagnostic Codes: Familiar with diagnostic codes, aiding in accurate patient record management.
  • Empathetic and Patient-Focused: Shows genuine concern and empathy for patients’ needs and experiences.
  • Effective Team Coordination: Communicates and collaborates effectively with the team to maintain optimal clinic workflow.
  • Team Player: Works cooperatively and supportively with all team members to ensure a cohesive work environment.
  • Medical and Optical Knowledge: Possesses a basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and optical principles, including refraction and contact lenses, and is familiar with the use of optical equipment.
