Job summary

Southern California Edison (SCE) is seeking an Operator, Substation in Ventura, CA to support safe and reliable operation of the electrical grid. You will operate and monitor substation equipment, perform switching, and respond to system conditions to maintain service for millions of customers.

In this role, you will inspect facilities, maintain logs, and execute clearances while adhering to safety and NERC/CIP requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid California Driver License or ability to obtain one before start date.
  • Must have completed the Basic Operator Class and pass required tests. This position is rotating shift.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor substation equipment from a switching center or attended substation.
  • Determine system/ equipment status from instruments and logs.
  • Perform switching operations following step-by-step instructions.
  • Issue, transfer, and release work clearances per procedures.
  • Inspect substation equipment including transformers, breakers, and batteries.
  • Identify abnormal conditions and take corrective actions to protect equipment.

In this role, you will help support the safe and reliable operation of SCE's electrical system by operating and monitoring substation equipment, performing switching activities, inspecting station facilities, and responding to system conditions to help maintain electric service for millions of customers. As an Operator, Substation, your work will directly contribute to maintaining grid reliability, protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting the delivery of safe, dependable power throughout Southern California.

A Day in the Life
As An Operator, Substation, You Will
  • Operate and monitor electrical substation equipment from a switching center or attended substation.
  • Determine system and equipment operating status through inspection of instruments, logs, dispatch information, and communications from previous shifts.
  • Perform switching operations and execute step‑by‑step switching instructions to support planned and emergency work activities.
  • Issue, transfer, and release work clearances in accordance with established operating procedures.
  • Inspect and monitor substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, batteries, fuses, insulators, and auxiliary systems.
  • Identify abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate action to protect equipment and restore service.
  • Maintain operating logs, records, reports, and station documentation.
  • Support station upkeep through routine equipment servicing, housekeeping, and facility maintenance activities.
  • Work safely and effectively in both normal and emergency operating conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid California Driver License or the ability to obtain one before the start date.
  • Must have completed the Basic Operator Class successfully and pass all required tests. This position is rotating shift.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and basic principles of physics as they relate to power system operations.
  • Knowledge of substation electrical and mechanical equipment and associated operating practices.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, or monitoring electrical utility, industrial, power generation, or substation equipment.
  • Experience executing switching procedures and following detailed operating instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical one‑line diagrams, system drawings, and operating procedures.
  • Experience identifying abnormal equipment conditions and taking corrective action.
Additional Information
  • This position’s work mode is on‑site. The employee will report to an SCE facility or in the field location. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is Ventura, CA. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time in the SCE territory.
  • Position will require up to 75% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un‑escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
  • Relocation does not apply to this position.
  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Reference our Information Guides for the following tests: (Test #4028). Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position.
