Job summary

Abbott Laboratories in Abbott Park, IL, is seeking a Group Leader to oversee centralized utilities across multiple facilities within the GES Global Engineering Services division. You will direct day-to-day operations, manage maintenance tasks for boilers and chillers, and ensure optimal plant stability and cost efficiency.

• Qualified Shift Group Leader as per LCU Course # GESDV-APU-00012.
• High School Diploma/GED.
• A minimum of two years’ experience with boiler or chiller operation.
• Basic understanding of mechanical systems and equipment (pumps, valves, piping).
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair to restore proper operation.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and with others.

Responsibilities

• Uphold day-to-day operational expectations of the Plant Manager.
• Analyze plant casualties and implement corrective actions for stability and efficiency.
• Distribute maintenance tasks to Sr. Utilities Operators.
• Assist in setting departmental expectations, processes and policies.
• Perform plant walkdowns for readiness and cleanliness.
• Identify areas for cost control and initiate changes.
• Ensure adherence to safety policies and quality checks.
• Oversee equipment operation supplying steam, chilled water, freshwater, compressed air, and purified water to 50+ buildings.
• Coordinate status communication to technicians, operators and service providers.
• Monitor Distributed Control System and detect equipment issues.
• Serve as primary contact for after-hours emergencies and coordinate repairs.
• Follow GMPs, JSAs and plant safety rules.

The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location within the GES Global Engineering Services division.

The Group Leader is esponsible for overseeing and providing all centralized utilities to Abbott Park, Abbott Park East, K-Complex, and AP88 for manufacturing, R&D, and administrative facilities. Directs and provides guidance on the day-to-day operations, routine maintenance tasks and emergency conditions to Sr. Utilities Operators and other parties affected.

What You'll Work On:

• Responsible for upholding the day-to-day operational expectations of the Plant Manager.
• Analyzes and responds to operational plant casualties and implements corrective actions as required to ensure optimal plant stability and efficiency.
• Distributes maintenance to Sr. Utilities Operators.
• Assists Plant Manager in laying out departmental expectations, processes, and policies.
• Performs plant walkdowns for overall readiness and cleanliness.
• Determines areas of improvement for cost control and initiated changes.
• Ensures all employees abide by safety policies and quality-checking processes.
• Directs and oversees the equipment operation needed to supply the necessary (steam, chill water, freshwater, compressed air, well water, fire protection, purified water) to over 50+ buildings at both peak efficiency and minimum cost.
• Ensures good customer service by effectively coordinating and communicating the status of work and job information to technicians, operators, and other service providers and impacted shareholders.
• Oversees the Distributed Control System and makes observations to detect any equipment problems and acts to correct those problems.
• Serves as the primary contact for afterhours emergencies and contacts appropriate on or off-site personnel to facilitate repairs.
• Follow all plant and department procedures, GMPs, JSAs and general plant safety rules

• High School Diploma/GED
• A Minimum of two years ‘experience with boiler or chiller operation.
• Basic understanding of mechanical systems and equipment, including but not limited to pumps, valves, piping, etc.
• Ability to troubleshoot and determine the cause of improper machine operation, and make necessary adjustments and repairs to return to proper operation
• Ability to perform well with minimal supervision and work well w/ others

The base pay for this position is $28.25 – $56.55 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
