Job description

SUMMARY: This is skilled and mechanical work in the maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of various components of the City water and sewer systems. Work involves performing preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs on water wells, tanks, pump stations for wells and associated equipment; monitor gauges, meters, recordings and adds or adjusts appropriate amounts of fluoride and other chemicals into specific water lines. Incumbent performs preventive and corrective maintenance, and repairs lift stations and pumps for sewer system and associated equipment; monitors all vacuum and pump systems. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior with wide latitude for independent judgment. Work is reviewed through reports, discussions and accomplishment of desired results.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING DUTIES. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE COMPANY AND LISTED AS SUCH IN THE INCUMBENT'S PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ELEMENTS. VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. THOSE THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE; THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY AND MAY BE AMENDED OR ADDED TO AS NEEDED BY THE CITY OF RIDGELAND.

1. Inspections and Maintenance

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(Any one (1) position of this class may not include all duties listed, nor do listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class).

Inspects and services a variety of pumps, valves, gauges, meters, and chemical feeding equipment on a routine basis and repairs such devices as necessary.

Inspects and maintains water wells, electrical and mechanical systems.

Maintains and adjusts all chlorinator and fluoride pumps for proper flow required by standards of the Mississippi State Board of Health.

Monitors SCADA wells, lift stations, metering stations each work day and checks trends.

Inspects metering stations and lift stations monthly and when failures are identified by SCADA.

Runs monthly flow reports on SCADA on all EMCRSS and compares to City of Jackson flow report.

Runs end of year flow report on SCADA on EMCRSS and compare to City of Jackson flow report.

On monthly basis, reports to the administration on pro rate share and amount over to City of Jackson.

Obtains water samples as required each month on existing and new systems.

Checks recordings, chlorine and fluoride pumps and cylinders, chemical feed and mixing mechanisms, gauges, and valves, and overall operation of water wells and water well pump stations.

Incumbent is subject to working both inside and outside and being exposed to weather, fumes, odors, gases, dust, and toxic conditions.

Inspects all sewer lift stations and pumps and performs repair and maintenance as necessary.

Inspects all sewer wet wells and performs maintenance and cleanup duties as necessary.

Collect sewer samples for inspection as required to Environmental Protection Agency standards and maintain records accordingly.

Maintain records of equipment, repairs and lubrications.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory duties are required.

INCUMBENT PERFORMS OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED; ANY DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDED IN THE EMPLOYEE'S PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THAT EMPLOYEE'S POSITION WITHIN THE JOB CLASSIFICATION.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following minimum qualifications have been identified by subject matter experts (SME'S) who have supervised this position or functioned in the position; they are based upon job analysis information supplied by these SME'S. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited high school or acceptable equivalent, or vocational school.

AND

Experience:

Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of industrial mechanical maintenance work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must have and maintain a valid Mississippi vehicle operator's license.

Must obtain a Class I Water Pollution Control Operator’s Certificate and a Class D Water Works Operator’s Certificate from the Mississippi State Board of Health within one (1) year of the date assigned to position.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of mechanical maintenance trades.

Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of electrical and combustion pumps and related equipment.

Considerable knowledge of utility plant machinery and equipment, plus the ability to perform wide variety of maintenance and repair tasks.

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and proper safety precautions for the safe performance of the job.

Ability to diagnose defects in electrical and mechanical equipment similar to that utilized in pump stations used to supplement main plant water and sewer systems, and to repair such defects with reasonable proficiency.

Considerable knowledge chlorine cylinders installation and emergency procedures.

Ability to do work that requires good physical condition, agility, strength, and stamina.

Ability to climb to heights or ladders and to perform work at such heights.

Skill in the use and care of tools and machinery used in the mechanical trades.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.

Ability to operate an automotive vehicle in a safe manner. (Automobile or pick-up truck).
