Job summary

HKA Enterprises is seeking an Operator-in-Training for our water/wastewater treatment facility in Hood River, Oregon. You’ll learn to operate and maintain processes, monitor equipment, collect samples, and maintain records as you work toward your first-level certification.

This role offers hands-on experience, a clear path to advancement in utility operations, and a starting pay range of $23.00–$25.00 per hour DOE. Training and safety are emphasized in a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks throughout an 8‑hour shift.
• Comfort working in environments with noise, machinery, confined spaces, fumes, and chemicals — all required PPE provided.
• Reliable attendance and a strong commitment to safety.
• Nice to have: Knowledge of engines, pumps, and related equipment operation and maintenance.
• Basic understanding of biological and chemical principles related to water treatment.
• General maintenance experience and safe work practices.

Responsibilities

• Learn and gain skills in equipment maintenance and plant servicing operations
• Operate treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water, wastewater, sludge, and effluent
• Operate valves, gates, pumps, engines, and generators manually or by remote control to adjust flow and treatment processes
• Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels; observe and report abnormalities to supervisors
• Maintain shift logs and record meter and gauge readings
• Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests and analyses
• Perform routine maintenance functions and custodial duties
• Follow oral and written directions; maintain cooperative working relationships
