Job summary

Vulcan Materials Company is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for our Lamar, CO plant. The role focuses on safely operating haul trucks, pit trucks, water trucks, forklifts, and other equipment to load, dump and move materials.

You will perform pre- and post-shift safety inspections, assist with basic maintenance, document reports, and adhere to SHE policies while working outdoors in varying weather conditions. A High School Diploma or GED is required, with heavy equipment experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Heavy equipment operator experience preferred.
  • Must speak/read English and follow safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • Operate off-highway heavy equipment (haul, pit, water, forklift, stockpile, bin, plant trucks) with competence.
  • Perform pre- and post-shift safety inspections and complete daily equipment reports.
  • Assist mechanic with minor service and repairs and notify supervisor of intricate repairs.
  • Maintain good housekeeping on equipment and assist with routine preventative maintenance.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in spaces that may be high or cramped.

Job description

Job Overview

This position’s primary responsibilities include the operation of off‑highway heavy equipment such as haul truck, pit truck, water truck, forklift, stockpile truck, bin truck and plant truck within the facility. Safely drives and maneuvers equipment into position for loading, dumping and spreading material. Assists in stockpiling materials at the plant and stockpile area and hauls other material as required. Inspects vehicle mechanisms and monitors and maintains fluid levels. Assists the mechanic with minor service and repairs. Candidate will be responsible for performing general maintenance work in and around the plant, making a variety of general or ordinary repairs and notifying the plant manager of any intricate or complicated repairs.

Essential Functions
  • Employee is expected to operate equipment units with a high degree of competence, skill and proficiency.
  • Perform pre‑shift and post‑shift safety inspections and complete daily equipment reports.
  • Report unsafe mechanical conditions to shop foreman and supervisor.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices on equipment.
  • Assist with equipment routine preventative maintenance.
  • Will work outdoors and be exposed to varying and/or extreme weather conditions (heat, wet, cold, etc).
  • May work in high or precarious places or cramped work spaces that require awkward positions.

Education
  • High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.
Experience
  • Heavy equipment operator experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comply with all SHE and other company policies, procedures and requirements.
  • Follow established traffic patterns avoiding road hazards and other hazardous conditions.
  • Perform duties safely, responsibly, and proficiently, observing all safety and health rules.
  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.
Other Requirements
  • Must be able to work required overtime and a flexible work schedule.
  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet customer needs.
  • Must be able to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; grip, climb, reach, shovel, squat, crawl or pull, push, bend and lift 45 pounds.
  • Must be able to speak, read and have a working knowledge of the English language.
