Job summary

Aecon Utilities is seeking an experienced equipment operator to join our team in the United States. This role involves excavating live utilities, operating heavy equipment, and following strict safety and reporting protocols.

The position requires completing a pre-employment Drug & Alcohol screen, CSTS-2020 certification, and Ground Disturbance training. Travel to project sites may be required; a valid driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Experience in distribution natural gas utility installation.
  • Aptitude for mechanical application of truck controls and equipment.

  • Coordinate machine actions; respond to signals from team members.
  • Interpret stakes and signage on the land.
  • Ensure all reporting requirements are fulfilled.

Our Energy operations consist of natural gas gathering systems, distribution services maintenance, facilities construction, and water distribution. Gas distribution is the largest segment in the pipeline distribution portfolio, offering network design and construction or rehabilitation services for gas networks across Canada and the United States.

Reporting to the Site Supervisor, the Operator will be responsible for all phases of project execution.

Please note that this position is unionized, therefore it will be a requirement to join the union upon acceptance.

What You'll Do Here
  • Ability to operate all equipment functions independently and safely.
  • Move materials and equipment and perform trenching, excavation, grading, and compaction activities.
  • Capability to complete safe excavations and trenches, understanding sloping and benching requirements.
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads, and respond to hand or audio signals from team members.
  • Interpret stakes and signage on the land.
  • Ensure all reporting requirements are fulfilled.
  • Work under stress and with commitment to timelines and deadlines daily.
  • Adhere to site‑specific rules and regulations.
  • Protect and promote the interests of the company in all matters and take actions as required to satisfy such responsibilities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain excellent communication between members of the team and clients.
  • Constant sitting, driving, and reaching.
  • Work extended hours.
What You Bring To The Team
  • Minimum 3 years of operator experience excavating live utilities.
  • Experience in distribution natural gas utility installation.
  • Valid driver's licence considered an asset.
  • Aptitude for the mechanical application of truck controls and equipment.
  • Ability to operate all heavy equipment functions independently and safely.
  • A team player with a safety‑conscious attitude.
  • Physical strength and stamina.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with managers, peers, and clients.
  • Capacity to work in outdoor weather conditions including, but not limited to, extreme temperatures (heat and cold), rain, sleet, snow, wind, and wet/humid conditions.
  • CSTS‑2020 Certificate.
  • Ground Disturbance II (Global or Aztec).
  • Regular travel to project sites may be required on occasion.
  • Candidates will be required to complete a pre‑employment Drug & Alcohol screen.

The expected pay for this role is $37.91 USD per hour as per the current Collective Agreement.

Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
