The Operations Manager position reports to the Alsip, IL Plant Manager and is a key member of the Alsip leadership team. Supervises all Alsip site operations hourly employees and a Production Superintendent. Has direct interaction with the site management team including production, logistics, engineering, maintenance, quality, HES, and HR. Responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Alsip, IL facility to achieve business objectives and meet regulatory requirements. Provides leadership and coaching to operations and maintenance personnel; ensures the plant meets inventory requirements; operates within budget based on forecasted plant volume demand; meets customer expectations through continual improvement in product and process quality; and helps develop personnel to meet/exceed expectations and prepare for career advancement.
Responsibilities
Department Staff Management – 45%
- Supervises all Alsip site operations personnel and one Production Superintendent.
- Serves as a coach and mentor to department personnel.
- Motivates workforce through visibility and direct contact to ensure safety and productivity.
- Counsels on performance as appropriate.
- Directs and leads the Operations team to ensure safe and efficient plant operation and maintenance, meeting customer deliveries.
- Works closely with Shift Team Leads to develop leadership skills.
- Identifies skills development and training needs.
- Uses Kronos payroll system for bi-weekly payroll review, processing, and approval; has a backup trained for this process.
- Completes Performance Management Process for direct reports.
- Encourages team members to develop and utilize employee development plans.
- Ensures effective implementation of work processes, operating discipline, management systems, enabling technologies, and roles.
- Creates an environment that fosters team and individual empowerment and maintains a positive organizational culture.
- Acts as SMART Coordinator for effective implementation and management of all elements within Operations and Maintenance departments.
Production Support Activities – 20%
- Coordinates resources to meet production forecasts, participating with the Business Team to ensure goals are met safely and within budget.
- Participates in regular meetings with Supply Chain and Sales to determine production requirements and impacts of forecast changes.
- Coordinates production with maintenance activities and turnarounds.
- Prepares weekly and monthly reports.
- Drives continuous process improvements.
- Supports site OAU/OEE tracking and improvement efforts, serving as backup.
Site Safety and Environmental Leadership – 15%
- Ensures compliance with regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements, emphasizing AIMS compliance.
- Participates in safety initiatives, including Behavioral Based Safety programs.
- Reports, investigates incidents, and implements corrective actions.
- Ensures department adherence to HES training, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrates commitment to HES through high visibility and engagement.
Strategic Activities – 15%
- Leads site Dashboard development and management efforts.
- Supports compliance with Mechanical Integrity Program.
- Manages change processes to foster a culture of reliability.
- Coordinates department-specific People Systems Operating Discipline and processes.
- Supports reliability improvement activities based on recommendations from the Improvement Engineer.
- Monitors and maintains plant budgets for maintenance and operations.
Other Activities – 5%
- Participates in community outreach and CSR programs.
- Builds cross-functional understanding and supports SMART initiatives, serving as site SMART Champion.
- Supports site OPEX projects and AIMS initiatives.
- Co-leads components of AIMS Elements 4 & 5.
- Serves as backup to Plant Manager and acts as media contact as needed.
Qualifications/Experience
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing or related environment.
- Process Safety experience (PHA, LOPA, Safety Instrumented Systems).
- Understanding of technical and financial impacts of process decisions.
- Personnel management and organizational skills, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills for various audiences.
- Judgment, problem analysis skills, and stress tolerance.
- Ability to troubleshoot chemical processes.
- Motivated team player, capable of working at a fast pace.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of HSE regulations, OSHA, Process Safety Management, Environmental Regulations, Emergency Response.
- Problem-solving and independent action capabilities.
- Interpersonal and coaching skills.
- Initiative, decision-making, and influencing skills.
- Proficiency in PC applications, including Microsoft Office and SAP; ability to learn new systems.
