The Operations Manager position reports to the Alsip, IL Plant Manager and is a key member of the Alsip leadership team. Supervises all Alsip site operations hourly employees and a Production Superintendent. Has direct interaction with the site management team including production, logistics, engineering, maintenance, quality, HES, and HR. Responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Alsip, IL facility to achieve business objectives and meet regulatory requirements. Provides leadership and coaching to operations and maintenance personnel; ensures the plant meets inventory requirements; operates within budget based on forecasted plant volume demand; meets customer expectations through continual improvement in product and process quality; and helps develop personnel for career advancement.
Responsibilities
Department Staff Management – 45%
- Supervises all Alsip site operations personnel and one Production Superintendent.
- Serves as a coach and mentor to department personnel.
- Motivates workforce through visibility and direct contact to ensure safety and productivity.
- Counsels on performance as appropriate.
- Leads the Operations team to ensure safe and efficient plant operation and maintenance, and meets customer deliveries.
- Works with Shift Team Leads to develop leadership skills.
- Identifies skills development and training needs.
- Uses Kronos payroll system to review, process, and approve payroll bi-weekly; has a backup trained on this process.
- Completes Performance Management Process for direct reports.
- Encourages employee development plans and maintains related information.
- Implements and maintains effective work processes, operating discipline, management systems, and roles.
- Creates an environment of empowerment and fosters a positive organizational culture.
- Drives effective implementation and management of the SMART program across Operations and Maintenance.
Production Support Activities – 20%
- Coordinates resources to meet production forecasts, participating with Business Team to ensure goals are met safely and within budget.
- Participates in meetings with Supply Chain and Sales to determine production requirements and impacts of forecast changes.
- Coordinates production with maintenance activities and turnarounds.
- Prepares weekly and monthly reports.
- Supports continuous process improvement and OAU/OEE tracking.
Site Safety and Environmental Leadership – 15%
- Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, emphasizing AIMS compliance.
- Participates in safety initiatives, including Behavioral Based Safety programs.
- Reports, investigates incidents, and implements corrective actions.
- Ensures department adherence to HES training, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrates commitment to HES through engagement and visibility.
Strategic Activities – 15%
- Leads site Dashboard development and management.
- Supports Mechanical Integrity Program compliance.
- Manages change to foster a culture of reliability.
- Coordinates department-specific People Systems and processes.
- Supports reliability improvement activities and contributes to projects related to Six Sigma and other initiatives.
- Monitors and maintains plant budgets.
Other Activities – 5%
- Participates in community outreach and CSR programs.
- Supports cross-functional understanding of SMART and acts as site SMART Champion.
- Supports OPEX project execution and AIMS initiatives.
- Co-leads components of AIMS Elements 4 & 5.
- Acts as backup to Plant Manager and media contact as needed.
Qualifications/Experience
- 5+ years in manufacturing or related environment.
- Process safety experience (PHA, LOPA, Safety Instrumented Systems).
- Understanding of technical and financial impacts of decisions.
- Personnel management and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Judgment, problem analysis, and stress tolerance.
- Ability to troubleshoot chemical processes.
- Team player with a fast pace work style.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of HSE regulations and compliance standards.
- Problem-solving and independent action skills.
- Interpersonal and coaching skills.
- Self-motivated and decisive.
- Proficiency in PC applications, SAP experience preferred.
