We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager with a solid background in excavation, earthwork, and underground utility installation to oversee and enhance the daily functions of our field operations. This role is critical in ensuring crews are organized, work is completed efficiently, and profitability is maintained across both site development and utility installation projects.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in commercial construction project management, with proven expertise in estimating, budgeting, and field leadership. This individual will work closely with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to streamline operations, allocate resources effectively, and support successful project delivery.

The role also requires active collaboration with the estimating and finance teams to track and manage project budgets, labor hours, contracts, change orders, pay applications, and cost forecasting. As a key operational leader, the Operations Manager will serve as a primary problem-solver and resolution expert for all field-related challenges, driving productivity, accountability, and operational success.

Essential Job Functions

Operational Oversight & Leadership

• Lead daily field operations for excavation, grading, and underground utility projects – ensuring alignment with project goals, safety standards, and client expectations.
• Manage crew scheduling, equipment logistics, and material procurement to support efficient project execution
• Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to ensure coordinated, on-time, and on-budget performance
• Implement and enforce SOPs to uphold safety, quality, and operational consistency
• Mentor field leadership to strengthen accountability, enhance team performance, and support ongoing professional development
• Monitor field activities to ensure alignment with budgets, schedules, and profitability targets
• Foster a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement throughout field operations Field Operations & Problem Solving
• Serve as the primary point of contact for field staff regarding job-site challenges, resolving issues related to labor, materials or productivity
• Support field teams with the necessary resources, tools, and information needed to perform their work effectively
• Identify operational inefficiencies and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence Project Scheduling & Resource Allocation
• Develop and manage project schedules in Buildertrend and Monday.com in coordination with project teams
• Oversee the assignment of crews, equipment, and materials to projects based on scope, timeline, and resource availability
• Monitor project progress and adjust schedules or resources as needed to meet project deadlines
• Facilitate job kickoff and preconstruction meetings with estimating team, field staff and subcontractors

Budget & Cost Management

• Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to meet production goals and avoid delays
• Support estimating efforts by reviewing scopes, production rates, and subcontractor/vendor pricing
• Assist in contract review and negotiation to ensure terms support successful field execution
• Track job costs and production data, identifying trends and initiating corrective actions as needed Safety & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies across all job sites
• Conduct safety meetings and regular site visits to ensure adherence to safety and quality standards
• Implement prompt corrective actions to address safety concerns, inefficiencies, or project delays Communication & Team Coordination
• Serve as a key point of contact between the owner, project managers, and field teams
• Maintain consistent communication between field teams, project managers, and leadership
• Participate in weekly project meetings to review progress, challenges, and upcoming tasks
• Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture, providing mentorship and leadership to crews
• Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in commercial construction with a focus on excavation and utility installation
• Proven leadership in managing multiple field crews and construction operations
• Strong understanding of pipe laying practices (storm, sewer, water) and excavation standards
• Knowledge of earthwork operations highly preferred
• Familiarity with OSHA regulations, job site safety best practices, and compliance requirements
• Proven experience with estimating processes and job costing best practices
• Familiar with construction contracts, subcontracts, and supplier agreements
• Skilled in production tracking and aligning field operations with project budgets
• Excellent organizational and communication skills; able to clearly direct and motivate field teams
• Tech-savvy; comfortable with construction software platforms (e.g., Buildertrend), Monday.com and Microsoft Office
• Bachelor’s degree in construction management or civil engineering preferred; equivalent experience considered
• Fluency in both Spanish and English is highly preferred to effectively communicate with a diverse field workforce and support team coordination
• Strong understanding of operational workflows and financial management principles
• Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities
• Trustworthy leader who builds strong relationships across crews and clients
• Proactive problem-solver with a steady, decisive leadership style
• Deep understanding of how field productivity directly impacts project success and profitability
• Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred

• Salary range: $76,000 - $102,500 (based on experience and qualification match)
