Job summary

Montgomery College is seeking a full-time Operations and Maintenance Lead for Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses. The role oversees HVAC operation, maintenance and repair, with 40 hours per week and 5 days schedule.

This is a non-bargaining, non-exempt, grade27 position. Responsibilities include leading staff, coordinating contractors, ensuring equipment is maintained per manufacturer specs, and training team members in building automation and HVAC practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED, or vocational training in HVAC.
• Five years in facilities maintenance with at least one year in a team‑lead or foreman role.
• EPA Section608 Universal Certification.
• HVAC Journeyman License or Maryland Stationary Engineer 3rd‑grade license.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, specs, and work orders.

Job description

Position Overview

Montgomery College, Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses, have immediate needs for a full‑time Operations and Maintenance Lead. The work schedule is 5 days/40 hours a week. The Takoma Park/Silver Spring location is Monday‑Friday from 6:30am to 3pm, while the Rockville location is Monday‑Friday 2:30pm to 11pm. This is a non‑bargaining, non‑exempt, grade27 position.

Responsibilities

• Lead and perform work related to the effective and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and building heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC).
• Provide guidance and instruction to assigned staff engaged in mechanical, building automation control systems and HVAC services.
• Monitor, inspect, and review the work of assigned staff to ensure it meets established standards.
• Identify the training needs of staff and coordinate or conduct in‑house training.
• Perform routine tasks associated with maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, including heating and air‑conditioning systems, controls and related subsystems and components.
• Ensure Direct Digital Controls systems are properly calibrated and operate as designed.
• Perform operational tests of new and existing system command and control points.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained and serviced according to manufacturer requirements and that all mechanical rooms are safely maintained.
• Respond to customer concerns and resolve issues.
• Coordinate contract services and monitor the work of contractors.
• Identify issues and challenges within the unit and develop strategies to resolve them.
• Determine the materials and equipment needed to perform duties, including types and quantities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED, or completion of a vocational program in the building heating and cooling trade, or equivalent training.
• Five years’ experience in the facilities maintenance field, including at least one year in a team‑lead or foreman role.
• EPA Section608 Universal Certification (or equivalent).
• HVAC Journeyman License or Maryland Stationary Engineer 3rd‑grade license.
• Working knowledge of HVAC repair, maintenance, and installation methods, techniques, and standard practices.
• Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical and building automation systems as well as stand‑alone mechanical equipment.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, specifications, sketches and work orders, and prepare material lists and specifications.
• Ability to use hand tools and testing equipment employed in the HVAC trade.
• Strong instructional, training, teamwork, communication, and written/ verbal‑instruction skills.
• Eligible applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require employer visa sponsorship.

Salary and Benefits

Hiring range: $31.69–$41.19 per hour, with an initial placement between the minimum and midpoint of the range based on experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $50.39 per hour.
