Job summary

City of Stamford is seeking a Parks Maintenance Supervisor to direct the upkeep of parks, beaches, and facilities throughout the City. You will supervise maintenance crews, plan staffing, train personnel, and ensure safe, efficient work methods.

Responsibilities include managing projects, estimating resources, maintaining records, assisting with payroll, and supporting special city events. A high school diploma and five years of park maintenance experience are required, along with OSHA/Haz-Mat

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and five years of operational experience in park/recreation equipment maintenance.
  • Must be trained in safety, OSHA and Haz-Mat recognition and handling.
  • Possession of Connecticut Pesticide Applicator Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.

Job description

Under the direction of the Director of Operations or designee, is responsible for the maintenance of all parks, beaches and their associated facilities as well as designated grassy areas located throughout the City. Supervises staff responsible for performing unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled park and facilities maintenance tasks including the operation of light and moderately heavy equipment. Performs other related duties.

Supervision Received: Under the general direction of the Director of Operations or designee.

Supervision Exercised: Supervises subordinate staff.

  • Provides direction and oversees the operations and activities of assigned park maintenance crews.
  • Oversees the scheduling and activities of staff; plans, assigns, trains, directs, and monitors staff duties.
  • Oversees and participates in complex projects in park maintenance, weed and pest control; ensures adherence to safe and efficient work methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Works with supervisor in planning work assignments, including materials and staff resources needed to perform the work; assists in the development of work plans, procedures, and schedules.
  • Evaluates assigned work projects, including materials and staff resources needed to perform the work; estimates time, materials, and equipment necessary for the successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as appropriate.
  • Provides supervisor with updates on project status; informs supervisor of park maintenance and horticultural problems and needs.
  • Follows safe working practices and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Receives and responds to questions and concerns from members of the public; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to supervisor as appropriate.
  • Monitors inventory, orders supplies, and maintains purchase records within authorized budget.
  • Assist with administrative and payroll functions.
  • Maintains records and logs of daily activities.
  • Assist with City’s special events as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in the maintenance, development, repair, and installation of park fields, grounds, and facilities.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of inspecting and maintaining the safety of parks playground equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operational characteristics and safety requirements for the operation of trucks and other heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of complying with safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.
  • Ability to supervise including training, planning, organizing, scheduling, and coordinating.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply all relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accurate financial records and work within authorized budgeted resources.
  • Ability to operate a variety of park maintenance tools and equipment properly and safely.
  • Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships.

Graduation from high school and five years of operational experience and knowledge of methods and practices of the use, installation, maintenance and repair of parks and recreation equipment including lead or supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be trained in safety, OSHA and Haz-Mat recognition and handling. Possession of Connecticut Pesticide Applicator Certificate.

Possession of a valid drivers’ license.

Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) preferred.

Scope of the Exam:

The examination process will consist of two components, each weighted equally. The Training & Experience (T&E) evaluation (50%) will assess candidates’ relevant work history, and education. The written examination (50%) will evaluate candidates’ knowledge of operations, supervision, safety standards, and supervisory practices.

Final scores will be based on the combined results of both components.
