Job summary

City of St. Joseph is seeking an Equipment Operator I to maintain athletic fields and facilities within the Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities Department. The role operates light to medium machinery to support park maintenance and groundskeeping across the city’s parks and parkways.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience; all applicants must pass a drug screen and criminal background check. A valid Class A CDL is preferred but not required.

Job Summary/Scope

• Prepares, mows, trims, and maintains fields and grounds.
• Operates tractors with hydraulic lifts, arm reach mowers or other attached accessories.
• Operates such equipment as bobcat with all attachments; backhoe, highloader and mowers.
• Removes snow and ice from park facilities. Trims trees and hauls trash and debris to the landfill.
• Supervises prison work release inmates occasionally.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

• Helps in the general maintenance of the park system.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.

Material and Equipment Directly Used

Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires lifting, frequently requires walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. One or more years of experience required to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
