Job description

ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.

The Operations Forecast Analyst is responsible for supporting the production load forecast models used by on-watch Forecasters to produce the New England load forecast for all time horizons up to 21 days from the current day. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of these forecasts by regularly evaluating model performance, troubleshooting issues, retraining models as needed, and making recommendations for fundamental changes to ISO New England load modelers and external vendors. In addition to maintaining existing forecasting tools, the analyst leads initiatives to modernize and enhance the operations forecasting process to meet the growing needs associated with the increasing integration of variable energy resources such as wind and solar. This includes collaborating with project teams to improve forecasting software and associated processes. The role also involves the design, development, implementation, and testing of new tools and forecasting methods, as well as delivering end-user training. Success in this position requires a blend of technical expertise, project management capabilities, and strong interpersonal skills to guide projects from initial concept through to operational deployment.

What we offer you:

  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 days/week onsite
  • Base salary plus bonus program, professional development and tuition reimbursement, enhanced 401k and financial planning, wellness programs with onsite gym, flexible work hours, access to business networks & more, all in a stable and supportive work environment!

How you will make an impact

  • Build and deliver a prototype for probabilistic weather and load forecasting
    • Work with weather vendors and load modelers to incorporate load models into probabilistic space.
    • This will encompass leading the project to transition System Operations load forecasting capabilities to the next generation of available tools.
  • Regular maintenance of existing load models and forecasting tools
    • Monitor the accuracy of load forecast models and correct deficiencies by retraining and troubleshooting the models. Work with I.T. and other support personnel to migrate models through testing and into the Production environment.
    • Detect and anticipate model accuracy degradation due to changes in load patterns or seasonal differences, which is necessary for the completion of this function.
    • Serve as the primary conduit between Operations Forecasting and load modelers at ISO New England regarding the development of new load forecasting models or the incorporation of new forecasting techniques.
  • Coordination with Vendors of Solar (PV) and Wind Power Forecast Services
    • Monitor the accuracy and performance of wind power forecasts and solar power forecasts.
    • Coordinate with vendors when accuracy is undesirable. Refine and develop the definition of what considers a forecast to be desirable/accurate. Fully understand the process by which power forecasts are provided and be able to troubleshoot when they are not properly functioning.
  • Seasonal Analysis and Reporting
    • Provide analytic support to winter/summer outlook assessments, interstate gas pipeline winter/summer capacity assessments, and various readiness seminars for market participants.

    What we are looking for

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Mathematics, or a similar discipline (Applied Statistics, Economics, Data Science) is desired.
    • Familiarity with electric power system operations and power demand forecasting concepts.
    • Knowledge of algorithms used in forecasting models.
    • A working understanding of the factors impacting wind and photovoltaic generation and other new weather concepts in load forecasting models.
    • Probabilistic assessments of potentially highly variable supply and demand.
    • Develop and maintain a professional working relationship with teams/individuals across the company, other ISOs/RTOs, and various working groups.

    Desired but not required

    • ISO New England Markets
      • Real-Time Energy Markets settlement

This is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides outside of the U.S., relocation will be required.
