Job summary

Lutheran Church of Hope seeks an Operations Director for Hope+Elim, a campus in West Des Moines. This role directs campus operations, staff leadership, and ministry administration, reporting to the campus pastor and coordinating with the campus staff.

The position oversees administration, facilities, food service, safety, and hospitality, guiding volunteers and staff to deliver excellent worship experiences and events. Requires 10+ years nonprofit leadership experience.

  • Lead staff development and act as campus liaison on HR questions and payroll oversight.

Job description

Responsible for carrying out the operational vision for Hope+Elim (a campus of Lutheran Church of Hope) through the direction of the campus pastor and in cooperation with the campus staff.


Primary Functions

Operational Leadership – Ministry

  • In conjunction with the staff leads, providing vision, planning, organization, and day- to-day leadership of the following ministry areas:
    • Administration: Church database, metrics, office communication and management, and event logistics and registration
    • Facilities and Grounds: Maintenance, janitorial, projects, and lawn and garden staff and volunteer team oversight to provide excellence in hospitality
    • Food Service: Logistical and fiscal oversight of inventory, operations, and hospitality aspects of food and drink service for weekend worship and event management
    • Safety and Security: Work with staff, volunteer teams, and local law enforcement to implement and oversee all safety and security protocols for the property and facility including life safety, emergency, and facility compliance
    • Hospitality: Recruit volunteers to serve as Greeters, Ushers, Communion Servers, Parking Attendants, etc. and manage their involvement where and when needed for Worship Services and other related events, in an effort to provide the best experience possible for our guests.
    • Transportation Ministry: Recruit Drivers and Hosts to facilitate transportation for certain Shelter Partners, and individual residences.
    • Coordinate driver/host schedules as well as periodic requests from Partners
    • and other Hope Campuses to use our vehicles.

Staff Development and Management

  • Provided day-to-do leadership for ministry directors and coordinators in above departments, offering coaching, development, and feedback
  • Act as campus liaison to Lutheran Church of Hope CFO/COO for local human resource questions, documentation, and payroll oversight and questions at Hope+Elim. Serve as the subject matter expert for our Time Clock system.
  • In coordination with pastors and leadership team, develop continual opportunities for staff development, care, and investment.


Systems Champion

  • Provide regular input and fresh vision to the pastor and leadership team on current and future systems in place across the ministries of Hope+Elim including workflow, ministry organization, efficiency, and development opportunities.


Building Partner Management

  • Oversee the ongoing partnerships with our “tenant” partners as well as those partners who utilize space for ongoing programming.
  • Develop and provide oversight to a regular partners roundtable gathering, offering a place for logistical and strategic ministry coordination between organizations.
  • Manage the Memorandums of Understanding and any amendments to maintain a mutually rewarding relationship.


Project Management/Coordination

  • Lead/coordinate projects of all sizes e.g., installation of new doors, bell tower lighting, etc. to ensure successful outcomes according to initial scope and planning.
Secondary Functions


The Operations Director will also:

  • Meet regularly with the Hope+Elim lead pastor for debrief, feedback, leadership development and planning.
  • Attend weekly all-campus directors meeting
  • Attend weekly Hope+Elim leadership meeting, staff meeting, and any staff retreat and development days
  • Have a consistent presence at Hope+Elim worship and church-wide events (i.e. Christmas, Easter, Vacation Bible School, large mission events)
  • Support the mission, vision, values, and authority structure of Lutheran Church of Hope and the vision for multi-site ministry.

Personal Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the Hope+Elim Staff Covenant for spiritual, personal and professional relationships and behavior.
  • Maintain a vital and growing personal walk with the Lord through committed worship, Bible study, prayer and personal learning.

Skills, Education and Experience Required
  • Possess a Christ-centered, joy-filled passion for ministry which flows from a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Extremely strong organizational skills for administration and leadership of team-based ministry
  • Ability to supervise, inspire, and equip volunteers.
  • A passion for urban ministry and innovative ministry
  • Ability to prioritize and boundary ministry with personal and family life
  • Ability to lead, coordinate and manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent communications skills, written and verbal
  • Background of 10+ years in non-profit business management with fiscal and HR oversight preferred
  • Experience in non-profit database management and software, as well as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Hours: Full-time, 40-45 hours per week, Salaried
Requires weekends, various holidays, and occasional weeknights
