Job description

About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

The Operational Safety Superintendent leads the day-to-day operational safety function across Jerritt Canyon surface, underground, processing, and support operations. This role supervises and develops Operational Safety Specialists; maintains regulatory readiness; and helps leaders translate requirements and risk controls into consistent field execution.

The Superintendent is a visible field leader who builds trust, coaches effective risk decisions, verifies critical controls, and uses events, inspections, and performance data to drive practical improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, assign, and develop Operational Safety Specialists; establish clear priorities, field coverage, and performance expectations.
  • Maintain compliance and inspection readiness for applicable regulatory requirements, company standards, permits, and site commitments across surface, underground, and processing areas.
  • Support development and implementation of the site Risk Management system, including critical-control verification, workplace examinations, pre-operational inspections, risk analysist quality, formal risk assessments, and risk-register updates.
  • Lead or support event notification, classification, investigation, causal analysis, corrective-action development, learning communication, and effectiveness verification.
  • Support Contractor Safety Management from mobilization and onboarding through field oversight, performance review, corrective action, and closeout; partner with contractor representatives and operational owners.
  • Conduct and coordinate field inspections, audits, observations, and assurance activities; identify trends and ensure actions are assigned, tracked, verified, and closed.
  • Partner with Mine Operations, Processing, Maintenance, Technical Services, Training, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Response, Human Resources, and site leadership.
  • Provide safety input for planning, Management of Change, projects, commissioning, and high-risk work, including energy isolation, confined space, work at height, hot work, lifting/rigging, excavation, ground control, traffic management, and mobile-equipment interaction.
  • Develop clear procedures, standards, communications, and performance reports; monitor leading and lagging indicators and recommend focused improvements.
  • Participate in emergency response, on-call coverage, and regulatory interactions as assigned; stop or elevate work when critical controls are absent or ineffective.
  • Spend meaningful time in the field and be accessible to the workforce.
  • Coach leaders and employees to own risk and resolve issues at the operating level.
  • Set a high standard for professionalism, follow-through, learning, and accountability.
  • Promote reporting, respectful challenge, stop-work authority, and continuous improvement.

The above responsibilities are representative and may not include all assigned duties.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, mining, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.
  • Progressive safety experience in mining or heavy industry, including leadership or supervisory responsibility.
  • Experience supporting surface, underground, and/or mineral processing operations; multi-area experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and regulatory inspection processes.
  • CSP, CMSP, ARM, TapRooT®/investigation, or comparable safety and risk credentials.
  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and talent-development capability.
  • Practical knowledge of risk management, critical controls, investigations, action management, audits, and contractor safety.
  • Sound judgment and the confidence to influence at every organizational level.
  • Clear written, verbal, facilitation, and regulatory communication skills.
