About Atmo

Atmo builds high-resolution weather forecasting for operations that need more than a generic briefing. We combine our own forecasts with nowcasts, field observations, and global models, and we deliver a complete meteorology services.

The role

You are an Atmo operational meteorologist. You own the daily forecast that field teams use, you update it when conditions change, and you explain the call to operations. You also check how the forecasts performed against observations and feed that back into the product. You sit with how crews actually deploy and use the forecast, and you turn that into clear UI improvements and product specs. Over time you will support more than one geography with the same Atmo desk.

What you will do
  • Produce daily operational forecasts and updates for field programs, using Atmo forecasts, nowcasts, observations, and global models.
  • Own the operational recommendation (go, wait, or stand down) and the timing. Brief it in plain language.
  • Issue nowcasts when the posted forecast is no longer right.
  • Verify forecasts against field observations and keep a clear record of what worked and what did not.
  • Review sensor and field data during events and fold it into the next cycle.
  • Support field deployments as needed (site weather, timing, safety, debrief). Some travel.
  • Work weekends and holidays when operations are active.
  • Document the workflow so coverage is consistent across shifts and sites.
  • Define UI improvements and product specs from real customer deployment and use: what the field needs to see, when they need it, and what is missing or misleading in the current tools. Write those requirements clearly enough for engineering to build.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science (or equivalent). Master’s a plus.
  • At least 5 years of experience in operational meteorology.
  • San Francisco, CA, on-site.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays during active operations.
  • Ability to travel to field sites (passport; willingness to work in the field, including at elevation and in winter conditions).
  • Clear written and spoken English.
  • Comfort with forecasts, soundings, and satellite and radar. You will learn Atmo systems on the job.
  • Ability to turn operational use into written UI and product requirements.
Nice to have
  • Field-campaign experience.
  • Some coding for pulling forecasts, comparing to observations, and making simple plots.
  • Experience briefing non-meteorologists under time pressure.
  • Experience writing product or display requirements for forecast or operations tools.
